The Dark Pastime is a Single Player modification (or add-on) created by a group of fans for the Jedi Academy video game. Currently Part I has been released, the work continues on next chapters.
The story takes place in 17 ABY, several years after the original game and the events with Tavion Axmis and her Sith cult. The Jedi Academy became a large organization of peace-keepers, loyal to the New Republic with the capital on liberated Coruscant. Former Galactic Empire is weakened and is known as the Imperial Remnant, yet still has enough forces to fight both the Republic and the Jedi. By the time of TDP the struggle between the factions continued with a usual pace, until the incident in the system of Goura: somehow a Republic military base was destroyed with all personnel dead. Most would blame the former Empire for this vicious act, but new major figures might be pulling the strains so that everyone believed this way.
Mon Mothma, the president of the New Republic, asks the Jedi for help – once again - to find out what really happened with the Republic base on Goura and investigate any possible Imperial activities in that sector. So it happens that Kyle Katarn, an agent of the New Republic and now a Jedi Knight locates the likely Imperial culprit and chases the Imperial dreadnaught responsible for the attack.
The Imperial captain manages to leave his ship and flee to Ord Mantell, where he is later killed by a mysterious assassin. A new plot against the Jedi and the Republic itself is obvious. And Kyle Katarn is the only one to succeed in revealing the identity of the face behind the tenebrous game against the Galaxy...

This could have been a much larger news update on the mod, but we don’t release major posts like this (obviously making a good material also requires time). I guess putting all the efforts into the mod itself is better than posting pictures and texts for the sake of posting.

The next chapter is larger than the first one and includes several planets. Two missions take place on Dantooine and Sulon (these are mostly complete), but Yavin IV, Coruscant hubs and several Anarmar levels will also be available. Currently the latter one is in progress.

After the attack on the Galactic Senate, the New Republic
is slowly restoring the seat of the Galactic Government.
Coruscant includes the Briefing area as before, but as you progress, you can visit other areas in the New Republic Intelligence HQ, for example a room for analysis and a feedback on the latest mission.

The Galaxy map is now a hologram instead of a screen,
and you can actually see different sections of space and Mission planets.

As mentioned above – you can check on your investigation in new parts of the HQ hub. Don’t forget to check your messages too! They will blink and send a sound, if something important arrived.

For this chapter and later missions, we created several characters/NPCs, including the new faction of the Force users. In the past they looked exactly liked Reborn (reskin), but I didn’t like the way it established a direct connection to the enemy from the Jedi Outcast game. Thus a new apparel was made, suggesting, that these are completely different followers of the Dark Side of the Force.

Guobbo is one of the local merchants on Rutana, which you can talk to in order to find the solution. This Toydarian deals in weapons, items and stuff… well, you know. Located in the Outer Rim the Rutana Spaceport is open to all kinds of trade. Added a few details to the original model by Hans Moleman (he was genius in making Watto this way for JO).

When travelling to the remote world of Uffel, you get a chance to come across Sayira (screenshot below), while chasing your true opponent on the planet. Being a historian she is also a local observer, who feels cautious towards all the outlanders, and for good reason! Specifically for her we created a new model, using a few elements of the Twi'Lek robe, but giving her a new haircut. This is in fact a third version of this character, with previous ones based on Mara Jade and Gwethenea (by HapSlash).

Other NPCs might assist Kyle in his quest, and in many cases their appearance was adapted or even a new one was created from scratch. This includes new enemies as well, but we’ll reveal them next time.

JK series is a long one, counting several games, as well as showing Kyle Katarn differently every time. Most players remember him as a bearded scoundrel or as a “Just-A-Guy” with a lightsaber and some questions. In earlier games his appearance was based on that of Jason Court, so this look was chosen for DP. However from now on you can actually choose his appearance between DFII and JO.

It was apparent from the start, that we needed more actors, but the dialogs were made in such a way, that we could use all the help we could get from our friends. However last year we made a breakthrough here, as we got a bunch of new voices for all the characters, including Kyle Katarn himself.

Kyle and Mon Mothma got new voices and lines in this Republic office,
redecorated in the traditions of chancellor Valorum.
Not only all the characters will have a new voice, often provided by professional or semi-professional actors, but their lines also got expanded. Previously silent NPCs also got their own unique MISC pack of sounds. In total more than 50 actors provided the voice for very different characters in the Dark Pastime mod.
Chapter I release + Update of the pack (French included) of The Dark Pastime. A minor look on Chapter II.
After thorough testing and fixing, Chapter I of The Dark Pastime is finally ready for download.

sick mod looks good great idea
this mod looks cool! can't wait to play
I've made several comments on various images, and overall, I'm very impressed with what I've seen here.
I'm following this endeavor from here on out.
A few suggestions:
(1) Please consider giving Kyle Katarn a new outfit to wear. He's been wearing essentially the same clothes for YEARS, and I'm sure that they smell quite wretched by now. ;-D
Seriously though, your story takes place YEARS after Jedi Academy, and it would enhance the sense of immersion if Kyle's clothing could have changed since then. Perhaps something that looks a little more Jedi-like? You could maintain the "smuggler ambiance" of the character by equipping him with a wristband that has glowing electronic readouts on it, and perhaps he still carries a shoulder holster for the blasters that he falls back into using whenever it's called for. And removing his one large shoulder pauldron would be quite an improvement as well. Oh, and add some gray to his hair and a few more wrinkles to the man's face.
(2) Watch the scaling of the environments. One of THE most common problems with custom-made maps for JA is that the scale is set too large for the environments, resulting in huge tables, chairs, and consoles that, in my opinion, adds unintended humor to a location. It looks like most of your locales are scaled properly, but there are a couple of shots that I've seen that look out of proportion to the characters occupying them.
I'm really looking forward to this. Good work!
Thank You very much for the review - we really appreciate that.
I'm following this endeavor from here on out.
Now about the suggestions. Of course we thought of giving Kyle a new outfit. That is a must. But I guess - nothing like Jedi Robes You know. I think Kyle is not that kind of person as to wear traditional Jedi clothes. He is still more like a mercenary and Republic agent, though he had students of his own.
Yes, scaling is really important. We had a funny thing actually - when we started creating maps years ago, I made a bed for certain location. then I cloned it and turned even into an object (like md3 You know). Then I understood that it was much larger than just "king-size". On the other hand it's OK. Hotels for instance exist for all kinds of guests, Kaminoans and Hutts alike. =)
We're trying to do our best. Our addon is more of a story and adventure rather than just shoting and slashin' all the enemies around. So I think that a true Star Wars fan will enjoy the experience.
sounds cool ill dl when its out gl.
Wow looks pretty interesting I'll download this for sure
Looks interesting: will keep my eye on this.
Some of the screenshots look to have some interesting things going on. Would be good if it was less hack n' slash and more story driven than Jedi Academy...
That's right. We believe that it's the plot that should be the strongest side of computer games. DP no exception here, though it's simply an add-on/mod.
the link its invalid please post another link
