The crew of the XSS Ecclesiastes have morphed into horrifying monsters. With only the ship’s AI for guidance, you must survive by scavenging for supplies, overcoming obstacles and fleeing from the creatures roaming the ship’s decks.
The Apocalypse (also known as The Apocalypse of Eden) is a first-person survival horror game.
– Avoid dangerous enemies: you are defenceless against the creatures now lurking in Ecclesiastes, and so must strive to avoid them.
– Original soundtrack and original voice acting.
– Discover the backstory through audio recordings and readable logs: dig deep into the backstory by searching for audio/readable logs scattered throughout the ship.
– Inventory system based puzzles: collect items and use them to solve environmental puzzles to progress.
– Atmospheric environments: exploring is essential to finding supplies. The Apocalypse's levels are dark and atmospheric.
– Subtitles: all dialogue is subtitled. There is also a Russian translation, which provides Russian subtitles and signs.
The Apocalypse takes place in the same universe as Lunar Descent (2017) and Dissolution (2011). Like these mods, it places a strong emphasis on environmental design and story telling. The Apocalypse has a horror/survival focus, drawing inspiration from games like Amnesia and System Shock 2.
I hope everybody reading is well.
Hard as it is to believe, The Apocalypse was released nine months ago. The reception was very positive, and I’m very glad so many of you enjoyed the experience. To those who played, to those who left feedback, and to those who recorded playthroughs, thank you!
I’m happy to be able to announce that The Apocalypse is now available to Linux users. This also means that the mod is playable on Steam Deck!
To play on Linux, you will first need to download the base game:
You should copy theapocalypseofeden to the appropriate sourcemods location, which for me is ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/sourcemods
Next, add the following shared libraries to your theapocalypseofeden/bin directory so that they sit alongside their DLL equivalents:
Please note: you will need to use the ‘upcoming’ beta option for Source SDK 2013 Base Single Player in order to play on Linux – you can configure this in the properties of Source SDK 2013 Base Single Player.
Finally, we’ve long had a gameplay trailer for The Apocalypse, but I’ve now put together a simple story teaser, to better advertise the mod’s setting, atmosphere and story:
I’m very happy to be able to announce that a Russian version of The Apocalypse of Eden is now available!

2021 has been, to put it mildly, an interesting year. As far as The Apocalypse goes, it has been a very successful year. The mod has gone from a shell...

Magnificent!
amazing mod :)
This is ********.
Why was this featured twice in Mod Of The Year?!
For those curious about such things, I have released the VMFs and FGD for the Apocalypse's levels: Moddb.com
The Apocalypse makes use of several custom entities – for inventory system management, readable notes etc.
On a personal note, I've been very happy with the reception the mod has received. While the attention and download count hasn't been massive, I am pleased the mod seemed to find its niche and be received well.
I've toyed with the idea of a small expansion pack for the mod, but except for this (which I may not do) I currently have no plans for further Source work. This project was a very welcome distraction during the Covid-19 pandemic, but I currently feel no need to work on any further mod projects.
Thanks to all who played and/or contributed to the project. I hope 2022 is treating you well.
Well, I was hoping a continuation to Lunar Descent would exist, but you did release this! Thanks for all the good mods, good luck with your future stuff.
good luck on your future projects!
I really enjoyed this mod! I had no idea it was connected to Dissolution (a mod I fondly remember) and Lunar Descent (a mod that I haven't played yet) until after I finished, heh.
You tried something different, and it worked out pretty well!
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the mod, and it's always good to hear what people who played Dissolution think of the new mod.
The different style of game – "stealth" horror instead of combat – felt like a huge risk. But, judging from the comments, the game found its audience and worked well for those who like horror games.
Best wishes!
Is there a plan to remake the Dissolution mod using the same style seen here? (I replayed the mod almost right after playing this one and it still is really good.)
It would be an interesting project! Partly, Apocalypse is in some ways a fusing of parts of Lunar Descent and Dissolution (although going a different direction from both for gameplay). Apocalypse keeps the art style of LD but has levels and storytelling more in the form of Dissolution. The encounter with Eden is even quite similar to the Bell encounter in Dissolution.
I don't think I will ever have the time to remake Dissolution but I'm glad to hear people think it still holds up. I sometimes forget it was released over a decade ago – it still feels like yesterday.
