The System Shock Remake, announced several years ago now, has just received a meaty in-depth look in the form of a trailer at the PC Gaming Show. With fans now seriously hyped for this modern retelling of a sci-fi horror classic, here's five mods for both of the classic titles that will get you refamiliarized with your AI foe, Shodan!

System Shock Infinite

System Shock 2 ended on quite the cliff-hanger - with the bait-and-switch ending of defeating Shodan, followed by her reappearing in physical form on a nearby ship. After that, however, there was no sequel, leaving many to wonder what would've happened to the Hacker next. Modders and dedicated fans stepped in, as is often the case with languishing stories, and created System Shock Infinite - expanding on the story after the ending and discovering the ultimate fate of Shodan.

Death: Pulled in by Cortex Reaver

With a limited number of RPG mechanics, System Shock is more about player decision in gameplay than their decision regarding their character. However, more choice and diversity is rarely something to complain about - and certainly not in the case of this mod, which seamlessly modifies the game's cutscenes using innovative and painstaking methods, as well as tweaking a few other mentions throughout the game, to swap the gender of the player character. It's a small, neat touch that helps fans replaying the game see it through different eyes.

Lazarus Decλy is an interactive multimedia video game project, utilizing Looking Glass Technologies’ 1994 PC classic, System Shock as a base. The goal of this 11 month project was to create an expansion pack-like experience, adding to the base game, utilizing some already existing game assets, whilst introducing many new and original assets which include: Original music, original audio log recordings, original textures, an original map design, and an original story unrelated to the base game whatsoever.

SYSTEM SHOCK: ReWired

ssrewiredv1.2.7

System Shock: Rewired is the very first full fan made singleplayer campaign for the original System Shock in over 24 years! 3 brand new levels with branching paths, 4 new cyberspace sections, new puzzles, brand new soundtrack by SpeedySPCFan, new fully voiced audiologs, new on-screen text and so much more awaits in the now dark corridors of the hospital ship UNN Bismarck. Playable with all existing versions of System Shock (Enhanced Edition recommended). What are you waiting for? SHODAN waits for your return! And she is eager to end your - in her opinion - useless existence.

SYSTEM SHOCK: Ruby Station

The second fanmission for System Shock called RUBY STATION and its standalone weapon mod just arrived! Play through the singleplayer level Ruby Station and learn about the 14 brand new weapons before taking them with you while replaying the original System Shock campaign. It's rare for mods to introduce tutorials for their mechanics - hoping users will pay attention to readmes and the like instead. A whole new mission to introduce major changes to the arsenal is a great way to both add new content and ensure players know what to expect before treading on familiar ground.

Showdown In Space

The System Shock Remake is the long-awaited remake of the first System Shock game released all the way back in 1994. Featuring a 2D perspective with some great atmosphere, the gameplay and aesthetics have nonetheless become dated over time, with wonky controls and difficult compatibility issues. A remake is something we've known about for a long time, but its development status has been patchy and fans have been waiting a long time to see the game truly come to life. Now, in the latest showing in the PC Gaming Show, the committed audience is finally getting pay-off for their patience.

Battle of Minds

The new trailer reveals a lot about the game, from the remastered look of a variety of new environments to the new enemy models for iconic designs like the Cortex Reaver. We also get a look at gameplay, with melee combat still challenging but seemingly, no longer a clunky and hard-to-read experience, and gunplay also appears to be much improved with punchy, flashy weapons to wield. We also got a look at the new take on the "hacking" world of the original game, which saw you float about cyberspace and battle AI algorithms. All the while, Shodan taunts the player - classic modulated voice and all.

Not Some Insect

System Shock's remake still does not have a release date, but a demo has been available for some time and the game is available for pre-purchase for £31.99 GBP/$44.99 USD. With Nightdive helming the project - who are notorious for faithfully restoring some of the best classics in gaming history - we're sure the wait will be worth it.
