This article explores some of the ideas behind Star Wars: Battlefront Legacy.

Hello, and welcome to the first article on ModDB for Star Wars: Battlefront Legacy. This article will explain what this mod is about and why I have made it.

First, a small history lesson. I first made mods for Star Wars: Battlefront in 2009. My very first attempt at modding replaced the Republic side with skins from Star Wars: Battlefront II. Based around that idea, I came up with the idea of a mod called "Main Play Mod" which went through several 'versions' as features were discovered. The last official release of it was Version 6, and work did begin on Version 7. But I decided to halt production on it as it felt too similar to the previous versions of the mod. I could not introduce any new ideas into it and so Main Play Mod's life ended.

For a few years I did not develop any new mod ideas. In 2013, I came up with a new mod idea I had simply titled "Expansion". That mod went through several non-public iterations, each with their own features but ultimately a lot of it felt either too similar to Main Play Mod or the base game, and after retitling it to "Celebration", "Anniversary" and "Expanded", it would utimately wind up by the wayside.

Cue 2015, which saw the release of the first console Star Wars: Battlefront title in 10 years. To many, it was a disappointment for not honouring the franchise's legacy. Inspiration can be found in the strangest of places and this got the ideas going again for a mod set in the Galactic Civil War. Basically, my thoughts were to create a mod that used some ideas from the EA game while honouring the franchise as a whole. The initial title of this version was "Accuracy Mod" though I stated it was a tentative title subject to change. Then in early 2016, Star Wars: Battlefront III leaked, and it provided a wealth of inspiration, particularly for the Clone Wars. Hence, Star Wars: Battlefront Legacy was born.

So with that, the answer should be easy to decipher: the mod's aim is to honour the franchise as a whole in a way EA's game could not. It sticks to the same basic framework the original game laid out for its sides (Soldier, Heavy, Pilot, Sniper, Special) while overhauling each side so they feel more unique.

The mod shall exist in two phases. Phase 1, which at the time of writing, is currently undergoing beta testing, is the full mod for the original game, plus Jabba's Palace. Phase 2 will include some maps brought over from Battlefront II and III, as well as some new maps. It will also introduce new heroes and skins.

Stay tuned for more news in the coming weeks for a release of Phase 1.

Why not for battlefront II?
Battlefront II is better for modding.

There are plans to do a mod for Battlefront 2, but as I started out modding in the first game, which is infinitely less complex to work with, what better place to try out my ideas? You'd be surprised how big the player base for the original game still is as well.
