A message from Max Loef, Lead Developer of Stellar Parallax about the future of Star Trek Infinities.

Posted by on

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It would be an understatement to say that our activity on this page has been somewhat limited lately. We’re very sorry for that – you’ve been our friends and supporters throughout this project. Without you this project would never have existed. On behalf of Stellar Parallax, I feel it’s past time that we give you an explanation.

I’m going to say first of all that I’m very proud of the Infinities team – we’ve put a lot of time and effort into making what we hoped would be the best possible Star Trek mod for Stellaris. The team has worked hard and long and once again impressed me with their talent and imagination. However, with real life issues creeping in the number of people on the Infinities team has gradually dwindled to the point where we simply don’t have the manpower needed to create a mod of this size. At this moment we only have four people able to commit to Infinities, and considering the workload demanded by a mod of this size even on a large team, as we had for Armada 3, I can’t ask them to make that commitment. Combined with the fact that with each major update to Stellaris Paradox essentially forces us to redo the mod from scratch, our progress on Infinities has slowed to a frustrating crawl. We have explored other options, such as recruiting new members and even negotiating to join with the New Horizons modding team. We felt it would have been a good pairing – they have a larger team and coders experienced with working on Paradox games, while we consider our artists to be some of the best in the business. However, after much discussion a common ground couldn’t be reached, which is a shame - we’ve got a lot of respect for the New Horizons team and we recommend you go and check out their work.

Unfortunately this means that we’ve run out of options and Stellar Parallax, for the last few weeks, has been left considering the future of Infinities. Therefore it is my sad duty to tell you all, on behalf of my team, that Star Trek Infinities has been cancelled.

This has been a very hard and disappointing decision for us to make, and we all feel like shit for letting everyone down like this. We worked really hard and had great plans for Infinities – we were really excited to bring you the best possible mod for Stellaris we could make. Unfortunately in this case things just haven’t worked out. We wish things could be different.

We know that some of you may lose faith in Stellar Parallax after this disappointment. We completely understand that. We promised a lot and haven’t been able to deliver. However, we hope to win back your trust. After all, it’s not all bad news.

Plans are already in motion for our next project, which we will be revealing soon. All I’ll say for now is that we’ll be returning to a more stable and familiar platform, and that a number of the ideas we had for Infinities will not be going to waste. ;)

Beyond that, our Armada 3 team are busily finalizing the last update for The Final Frontier, and a new version, Nemesis, will soon be released, offering a whole new kind of multiplayer experience.

So you see, Stellar Parallax is far from beaten. We’re still working, and we’re still dedicated to bringing you some of the best mods available. We appreciate your support, and hope you’ll stick with us.

Sincerely,

The Stellar Parallax team

That's a shame, especially as you couldn't reach an agreement with Horizons, as I was looking forward to your work much more than theirs as I expected it would be so much more refined.

It went both ways. Too many disagreements on what kind of features we were going for.

We had a good, long and friendly talk with them, but in the end our respective teams had different ideas and visions for our mods.

really sorry to hear that :(
there is any possibility that when the game develop a little more (so that patches will become rarer) and if the real life issue decrese the mod will be brought back?
because it was fantastic and it looked like that was at a good point in development...
anyhow with a tear in my aye i wish you all well

Yeah I agree with your sentiments. As Stellaris matures it will stop mutating constantly and as life itself is in motion the people required might just come together at the right time. Let alone the fact that a vast amount of work must have been done already. I think this will happen one day. For now it's just in suspension. Just a hope but it's very plausible.

That's a possibility. When Stellaris settles down and becomes an established game, and if we have the manpower avaialable, we may indeed return to Infinities. Some of our team members have already expressed a desire to continue working on Infinities here and there in their own time, so while Infinities is on indefinite hiatus, I wouldn't call it dead just yet.

I'm glad to hear that is more on hiatus than dead, hope the situation will settle :)
this mod would bring so much changes in the game, i really hope you manage to finish it someday ;)
even Armada III was released 5 years after the initial game release if i am not mistaken, there was enough time for the game to settle, stellaris will settle too sooner or later ;)

They finished Armada 3 quite fine, I think that would be reason enough to suspect they might be able to finish another mod of large scale.
If more team members had stayed this probably would have gotten along further.

I just have to say I am saddened by the fact that you need to put this mod on pause, but I would just like to thank you for the effort that everyone in your team put in. You guys (and probably gals) put in some serious time, effort, and love into this mod and it shows. Take some time, recharge, and then come on back ready to throw us your ideas. I know I for one will be waiting eagerly.

Thanks again

Well that is unfortunate. I was really looking forward to this! Ah well, Igues i'll have to make do with New Horizons. As good as that mod is, I know you guys have the ability to do better!
Regardless, I look forward to the next time you guys make a mod!

But hey ho. Keep your fingers crossed. The future isn't written in stone.

Shame you guys had to cancel, was looking forward to seeing the differences between Inf and NH. Still though I hope you guys don't just delete the progress you had made, those models look fantastic, and could possibly be applied elsewhere.

Ah I see what Orion meant about settling down. The number of updates to the base game. From what I understand of modding, it slows ya down by having to recode to the newest version, only to have that become obsolete before you even are ready to release.

I do have a few questions for if you guys continue in full later. And that has to do with the era's ships, can we keep building older designs, such as having an NX updated and built to TNG levels, with obvious differences, NH just replaces the model regardless of keeping the design, and there is no difference between an NX or an Excelsior module wise. The second is how would you guys have addressed ship build costs, which are high in NH and the cap on control-able systems and especially fleet cap.

On behalf of the entire New Horizons team, I can say we are all deeply saddened to hear that Infinities has been cancelled.

We certainly understand the difficulty of managing a mod team with high goals in the ever changing environment of Stellaris. 1.6 has been huge, 1.8 that is coming in 2 weeks will most certainly break most mods and the hints we have of the upcoming 1.9 and 2.0 look as though almost the entire game is going to be re-invented. That, however, is also what is so exciting about working on a PDX mod - the options we have today, compared to what we had a year ago, are endless. Every new version offers possibilities that even PDX themselves could not imagine. Thus, for example, a small feature that lets PDX gate access to one torpedo section allowed us to develop an entire new system of ship variants and specialization.

But, I, personally, can certainly understand and respect the decision here, considering the daunting challenge. Stellaris, after all, is not going to settle, knowing Paradox - they will continue to develop it constantly for years, possibly for quite a few months even after they release Stellaris 2, which may very well be only at 2020.

But yes... it is quite daunting for us, to adapt to every new patch, and New Horizons numbers almost seventy people. It is also, no doubt, difficult to work on the mod in a vacuum – the Infinities team made the very bold decision to release only a final product, while New Horizons chose to release an alpha version and iterate via community feedback. That can't be easy for any developer.

Our two teams had a long, involved history but I am happy and proud to say that both have decided to put our animosity aside. When Infinites have asked to join New Horizons we were ready to welcome them with open arms, and we still extend our hand in partnership to any member of Infinities, or the community, that wishes to join.

We wish Stellar Parallax all the best and we are certainly looking forward to working with them in the future, and to see what other amazing mods they may produce in the future.

Thats a shame to hear, i was quite looking forward to this mod, is there any chance for a smaller scale mod such as ship packs?

if you just stick to the vanilla weapons slots/layout they arent to hard to make, especialy since you already have alot of the assets ready i believe.

It's something that has been bandied around the team yes, but we're not 100% clear on what we'll do with the assets at the moment. Keep an eye out though, there's bound to be something interesting :D

Making an ENT era Sins mod would be awesome. I have some STA2 models (a chunk of stations) I was working on that I'd happily donate to such a project. Check out the mods in my profile if you decide to go down this route.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Such a shame but I understand, I do hope you create ship and weapon packs with the assets you created they were beautiful and Stellaris does need a little more variety in ships and weaponry, feels weird seeing another race using pretty much the same ships and weapons as me.

This is indeed a sad time, while i was really looking forward to seeing Infinities, as a modder myself i full understand the decision, esp with a game like Stellaris, that regular changes so mods have to be rebuilt over and over again.

I wish the team all the best for their future endeavours, and you have not lost any faith from me, as from the ash's something amazing will appear in the form of your next project :) :)

This is truly sad news indeed. Infinities was the a large part of the reason I even bought Stellaris. I'm extremely fond of the Armada 3 mod (which was the only reason I bought Sins) and I was really looking forward to seeing what you guys would do with this. I've been playing New Horizons while waiting for this, which is great, but I was really looking forward to Infinities. So sorry to see that it won't be happening.
