And then a Nebula-class cruiser equipped with two anti-matter mine layers drops out of warp, leaves two mines between them and warps away.

Given the colour of their ships, my guess is the Romulans went with 'Synthesis'.

Description

The Falcon cruiser entered service in the late 2360s to take over from the ageing Heavy Defender, and now serves as the Imperial Navy's foremost heavy cruiser. A heavily armed and capable vessel, the Falcon is rightly respected throughout the Romulan Star Empire and beyond.

The Romulan fleet is centered around its famed and feared warbirds - large, mighty vessels built to resemble mythical beasts to terrify the Empire's enemies. As the Falcon is a mere cruiser, it is typically commanded by young, ambitious Romulan officers working their way up the chain of seniority with the ultimate goal of commanding a larger warbird. Command of one of the Empire's premier cruisers shows that a commander is on the right path, and is presumed both loyal and capable.

Fortunately for these officers, the Falcon herself provides ample opportunities for distinction. The Romulans' powerful shields coupled together with heavy firepower mean the Falcon is capable of defeating a multitude of lesser threats, and these vessels are often deployed along the Klingon border, where skirmishes are common. Furthermore, in its short time of service the Falcon has developed a reputation for reliability.

In some ways this can be a double-edged sword - command of a cruiser in the Imperial Navy is seen as a form of crucible, separating the elite from the mediocre. A well equipped and reliable ship ensures that should an assignment be met with failure, the blame will fall squarely on the commander. And the Empire does not gently tolerate failure.
