Looks awesome! Will the text be part of the actual game, or is that just there to identify each planet for the sake of the picture?

I like the idea, but in compact systems overlaps will be real. I wonder if it wouldn't be better to have the class letter (M, K, L, J...) in the middle of the circle.

I can't wait to play the new version.

only if you could make it so that the icons are different according to your faction

I think unexplored sectors should have more neutral color. Probably white or grey.
Red means danger or hostility.
Asteroids probably should be grey and brown, but not green.
Icons should be easily distinguishable even for new player. Every second is important.

And what is the difference between class M Homeworld (and word Homeworld itself - capital?) and class M Metropolis?
What's about usual class M planets?

Added: I meant class D planetoid, not asteroid. Sorry.

Also, there are two clas K Adaptable planets. What the difference? Where should be planet name? It would be great, if you'll make a BIG planet name and it's class and status below underline. Or something like that.

> And what is the difference between class M Homeworld (and word Homeworld itself - capital?) and class M Metropolis?

The Class M Homeworld is a planet with the perfectly ideal conditions for supporting humanoid life (a Habitability Index of 1.00). Not surprisingly, these planets have developed advanced humanoid societies that are often on the cusp of, or have already developed warp travel. Homeworlds possess a multitude of large cities, but their societies have wisely struck a happy medium between ecological sustainability and industrial development. Examples of these type of planets would include: Earth, Romulus, and Bajor.

Class M Metropolis planets have been developed to such a degree that they can support an ecumenopolis, a city covering essentially the entire planet. Naturally, this means that they generate significantly more tax revenue and trade income than most other planets. There have been few, if any, Metropolis planets observed across the quadrant, although the planets Gideon and Scalos could be considered examples.

> What's about usual class M planets?

There are no 'usual' Class M planets. You will see a Class M 'Temperate', which, along with the Class M Homeworld, are the closest analogues to the old Sins Terran planets. Beyond these, there are many other varieties of Class M Planets that represent a variety of climatological, topographical, and developmental features. In total there are 14 distinct types of them.

I mean I would be really pleased if you'll release maps with all kinds of planets included. Yes, you've made many class M planets, but those should be used extensively. 10 class M Homeworlds without a single Class M Metropolis is not that kind of map I expect from a project I put a lot of faith in... Such as yours.

Same thing with random maps.

Also, it would be cool if temperate planets will be located in Belt of Life area, hot planets closer to a star and col planets far far enough. Not just by some "style reasons" or random.

Class M Metropolis planets will be rare. There may be some set piece maps where they will always appear, but they will only make up a minute fraction of the total gravity wells on random maps (some .05% or thereabouts). It would be unrealistic to have them be common. Due to their rarity and economic value, they will be battlegrounds when they do appear.

You can bet there will be at least a few maps that will attempt to do this.

I have many more planets and sector types to work with in TFF, there will be significantly more diverse areas in maps - even the older maps will be updated with new areas and planets. And when have I ever in any map spammed just one planet type in a map? While there may have been double-ups on occasion, depending on the map and how many players it's meant to support, I can't think of a single map I've made where every planet is the same type (without going through all 40 odd right now)... Was that a worst case hypothetical situation you were referring to, or do you have an example where I've spammed one planet type?

If you're talking STA3 maps, you're talking about me - yes. I'll be nice and give you some advice: If you have a map question - ask the map maker... Oh hey, that's me!

I asked if you had an example of a map currently in STA3, because if there was - that would be the first one I'd enhance for TFF. No need to get all haughty with me, Battlemage1.

Cool your jets. Don't take it as my concern, just a little funny to read something like that in the morning.

I remember in STA3 last version some specific maps (like a Starfleet Insignia, or Wolf 359 Map with best planets near the outer fringe) with strange planets in strange places. I took that as usual Sins map makers' logic: do as you think good. I can't say I was disappointed or impressed. Just a map. It's playable and there is no points I'd like to complain. I was busy ruining the Borg, after all (and sometimes Borg ruined me).

But there is one think I just remembered thanks only to you, Cailean. For some reason, players can't build starbases or outposts in orbit of shattered planets. Though, it's possible in asteroid fields and nebulas. I may be wrong, but I remember an outpost even in badlands. Probably you'll find some way to fix it.

That's by design Battlemage, and has been ever since the shattered world came in with v1.0 (I think?). The shattered worlds don't allow starbases to be constructed- there's some fluff I can't recall behind it. I agree that perhaps we could also look at restricting the construction of Starbases in asteroid fields and nebulas - especially the Badlands. It could add more of a challenge... I'll raise this issue with the team.

I doubt that Star Trek based mod should chase some sort of a challenge.

Asteroid fields and Azure/Mutara nebulas might be a logical choice for an outpost. Those rocks are almost static, after all. And field density presented in your mod is not that high it would affect navigation.
But Badlands, Metreon nebulas and other harmful places should not be available for construction.

Your maps are among the most fun I have had in Sins, heck even today I had one of my tense moments playing on the four horseman map. Only having limited resources and most of my ships had left to attack the enemy and I am suddenly attacked wave and wave by dominion with only 1 Nebula, 1 Galaxy, 2 Melbourne, 1 3rd fleet summon a few Defiants and Akiras had to hold off the enemy until my main fleet with my dreadnought could come back and help.

After playing that particular map today, I am excited and frightened at what diabolical maps will appear with all these new planet types, given this map already was a brutal start with merely only 2 asteriods and 1 dwarf planet I believe that I could colonize before I had to face at least 5 different highly equipped militia planets with loads of defenses.

Though I wish more mods had your map making skills to bring these awesome scenarios that leave me at the edge of my seat.

In a lot of the more competitive maps, I have purposely made resources hard to come by - you have to fight for resources: you're at war, after all. Some maps are 'hard mode' maps which feature planets inhabited and/or defended a larger number of neutrals. Every resource you gain, will hurt you considerably if lost - at least that's the way I intended it. While the maps already present will be updated with the TFF system types, there will also be maps developed from the ground up to take advantage of TFF. The intent, as Ambarenya has stated further up this dicussion, is to project a more 'realistic' solar system, where possible. However competitive or skirmish maps will also have more interesting strategies available.

I will say that map came out the way you intended. If the stats were anything to go off during my game. My Economy was not the best, I was stone dead last in capital ships but that was mostly because I had to pour my limited resources into frigates and cruisers after I spent my saved up resources on the Polaris. The pressure was indeed there.

I think a realistic solar system would still offer up a few challenges. I have faith in you and your team.

We won't be having V'ger, since by this time it already reached a higher plane of existence. However, the Borg Progenitor may get a visual overhaul that will make it look a little more like V'ger.

Description

The planetary icons for TFF are going to be a bit different. They'll be more like a interface and a lot more stylized. This image shows what it might be like.
