Maxwell was right...
Oddly enough, he was. The Cardassians proved time and again that they could not be trusted. They WERE preparing for an assault on the Federation, such as their attempted invasion of Minos Korva a couple years later. They DID supply Cardassian militants in the DMZ with weapons in the build-up to the Maquis uprising. And when their backs were against the wall they allied with the Federation's mortal enemy and were instrumental in starting the most destructive war in Federation history, even after the Federation had aided them against the Klingons.
And people call the Romulans treacherous!

100% agreed, just shows that a lot of the other races happily used the Federation's misguided trust in everything.
Don't get me wrong, going for the peaceful solution is the best possible outcome, but to me the Federation in TNG always felt like it was living in it's own little bubble of an utopia where war is not a thing... kinda like most of today's western countries, especially pre-insurgency/middle-east stuff.
Ahahaha. We've created the vast majority of unrest in the Near East.
