"Captain, I'm sorry we were late. It was not easy to convince chancellor Gowron to spare us any ships."

The moment I saw this screenshot, all the sounds of phaser fire and the dramatic, sweeping musical score from the show came rushing forward from my memory. Excellent screenshot, with a lore post to match!

Description

The Klingon Defence Force arrives, marking the turning point of Operation Return.

Giving up Deep Space Nine at the opening of the Dominion War had been a calculated gamble by the Federation. Rather than battling the Dominion for control of the station, Starfleet and KDF strategists decided instead to launch a simultaneous strike against the Dominion's shipyards at Torros III, with the aim of retaking the station before the Dominion devised a way to disarm the Federation's minefield at the mouth of the Bajoran Wormhole.

It was a gamble that almost brought catastrophe down on the Federation. Though the assault on Torros III had been a resounding and important early victory, the following months brought defeat after defeat, culminating in the disastrous Battle of Tyra, where an attempted counterattack by Starfleet's Seventh Fleet was decimated at the hands of the Jem'Hadar, with only 14 ships surviving from the fleet's original contingent of 112.

As Starfleet and Klingon forces continued to be forced into retreat at almost every engagement, morale across the allied fleets plummeted. Even a succesful covert operation destroying one of the Dominion's largest stockpiles of ketracel white failed to improve the situation, and as morale depleted even hardened Klingon warriors began to openly question whether victory against the Dominion was possible.

The situation was, of course, untenable. Total defeat was inevitable unless the situation changed. To that end, plans were drawn to retake the most strategically valuable position in the quadrant - Deep Space Nine.
