The conventional wisdom is that HBAO is for Nvidia or AMD and HDAO for AMD since it is designed to run more efficiently on AMD GPU's. I tried both a while ago and elected to go with low level HBAO on my AMD rig for less performance load. I recently started experimenting with changing the Priority and Core Affinity for the game. Changing the Priority to HIGH and core affinity to all but my first core (of 4) seemed to work a little better. My big shock came with revisiting the HBAO/HDAO decision again. When using 3 of 4 cores at High priority cores 3-4 picked up significantly in activity going from an average of 45-50% to around 85-90% activity. When switching from high levels of HBAO to HDAO my overall CPU usage for entire die dropped about 15-20%. That means that my CPU was working much less overall and my GPU only a little harder. This could be good news for those with the newer 8 core CPU's that run at a much lower core speed. So give it a try and compare your CPU usage and game performance using HDAO and see if it helps.

Please post any feedback here - thanks!

Those who have AMD cards AND use DX11 should see much more efficiency with HDAO. COP is an ATI/AMD branded game and HDAO is optimized to run efficiently on Direct3D11 hardware.
