I have done a playthrough with this. Here are some thoughts. TLDR: I recommend this mod, but AMD players may want to read more.
The biggest improvement over the original game is in the guns. In the original, you start out with extremely imprecise and ineffective weapons, but the enemies can shoot you just fine, and have a lot of health. This mod makes weapons much more effective, so that the early game is also more enjoyable. There's actually a lot of tweaking that has been done, and the various weapons feel very different from each other.
The work on scoped weapons in particular is admirable. Scopes look prettier, but the handling is also noticeably different. The scopes drag a bit when you move them, so that using them is somewhat more difficult, and this is good, because in the original games an AK with a scope was the end weapon. There are other little details: the sun reflects on the lenses, so you have to try to snipe from the shadows to see well. And the scopes can't be used well with NV on (it produces excess lighting), which is realistic and also forces you not to rely on magnification scopes alone. This also gives you a reason to use reflex scopes (I found myself using one in the final level).
There also are new weapons, with more short weapons you can keep in the pistol holster (pistols, a sawed-off shotgun, and I think a grenade launcher).
Artefacts have also been remixed, but without going too far (this is not Anomaly ;) ) You use them like in the original game. However, the stats have been changed a bit, and there also is a hunger stat. I think this is interesting, in the sense that it could give you a reason not to use artefacts, if you risk running out of food. In practice, however, you never risk to starve, and keeping yourself fed is a preoccupation that doesn't add much to the game. Also, I think there might be some confusion, because artefacts that increase hunger get a green line as if it were something positive, and I am not sure if hunger means satiation or actual hunger.
Visuals are good, but don't take visibility in account. The game comes with reshade installed. The models are good, the textures are good, the shaders are good. However, the weather is always extremely dark, like you rarely see during summer storms. This makes it hard to see anything during the day (you can play around with lumscale in the console and easily correct this). First-level low-light vision also doesn't improve visibility: it just adds a green filter, but it's just as dark as without it. The second-level one however works fine. Another visibility problem is due to there being only one mask overlay, and it's very foggy. I ended up modding the game to remove it, and the experience improved a lot. There also are a lot of visual effects which impair your vision if something bad happens to you. This can be immersive or annoying, it's really up to the player, but they did make the game much more difficult during the end level, when teleporting Monolith caused diplopia.
However, the real challenge comes from the engine. Like Anomaly's, it's an x64 version of the XRay. Like Anomaly's, it often conflicts with AMD drivers, crashing to desktop or just turning off visuals and going black, or even causing a driver system failure. These interruptions come up very frequently. Concerning the similar ones in Anomaly, VLutner explained that the only thing you can do to solve the problem is using DX9. However, on my PC, with CS:LFO, using DX9 tanks framerate. It often falls below the 20's, and actually below 10 when using the pip scopes. To play the game, I ended up installing DXVK, which translates DX9 to Vulkan. This actually sent FPS through the roof (around 120), but you can see some glitches here and there. Even without DXVK, however, DX9 just doesn't look as good as DX10 (character models in particular have odd visual effects), plus it makes the game even darker.
Other than these crashes, the game didn't have much in the way of bugs (although there are some). It's actually much better than the original CS. You can even continue after the main quest is done. It also adds a quest in Bar, which rewards you with a Remington sniper rifle. I'm happy it does, because it forced me to try it out, and I have to say that this mod is the first time I find a sniper rifle makes sense in a STALKER game. It actually became one of my favourite weapons (with the Groza).
However, the mod doesn't solve some of CS's weaknesses: during wars, you cannot capture areas on your own, and have to wait for allies who might never come; the Cordon machine gun and the Garbage robbery are still there; and stopping the Bandit assault on Agroprom still means giving up on an endless supply of weapons right close to a trader.
Then again, this is still a beta, and I think the end result will be even more worth playing. I actually still recommend this version, although the DX10 crashes with AMD robs part of the reason to play it over the original.
You should write a review man.
Any update news on this? I would very much like to give this a try once its VERY stable.
I installed the way instructed but as soon as I talk to cold to begin the story mode the interface and menu go invisible, and all keys are froze. I am forced to end process.
I do think the ambient swamp sounds are too loud, I can't recall if that is vanilla but they are definitely pretty loud.
After realizing the story mode is bugged, and the fact the creator is awol, I deleted this mod off my drive.
I've tried to get the mod running for 2 days now, please some one help me.
I extract parts 1-4 in to CS folder, then extract the patches 1-6 in the same folder. After that when I try to play from the FLO-launcher XrEngine crashes and I get a bugTrap msg, same thing when I try with strrt_x64.bat!
When i try from xrEngine.exe i get system.ltx missing. I have no idea what is going on, but i found a crash log.
