Throughout the 1930s, the Brazilian government under the administration of Getúlio Vargas, maintained strong diplomatic relations with the Italy of Benito Mussolini and the Germany of Adolf Hitler. However, from 1940 onwards, the United States began to pressure Brazilian diplomacy to move away from European totalitarian governments, especially after the sinking of countless Brazilian merchant vessels by German Uboats in the Atlantic. Getulio Vargas made numerous threats of war to Germany if the attacks did not cease, and Hitler would soon have said "It is easier for a snake to smoke than for Brazil to enter the war". In 1942 the snake smoked!!! Thus was born the FEB (Brazilian Expeditionary Force), whose preparation started in 1942, only entered into action in 1944 participating in the Italian campaign against the forces of Germany and the Italian Social Republic (RSI).
