The 0.90 Beta version of Sins: Remastered has been released.

Posted by on

First beta release is now available for download!

We are pleased to announce that we have made Sins: Remastered v0.90 Beta available for download and use to all. It is a fully playable version of the mod with all content prepared so far included. The only catch is that you must have shadows enabled at minimum or higher.

Shadows Enabled Required

Beta requires that shadows be enabled

What is Included?

This version of the mod is the ship shader and associated variations except non-shadowed. All titans, capital ships, cruisers, frigates and planet modules have been updated to make use of it. Advent, TEC, Vasari and Pirates included.

TEC Fleet 1

The TEC

Advent Fleet 3

The Advent

Vasari Fleet 1

The Vasari

A full suite of Post Processing effects has also been included. Bloom, vignette, chromatic aberration, micro bloom and tonemapping are all implemented. They make a dramatic difference in how the game looks when enabled. You can control them using the re-purposed "Bloom & Post Processing" toggle in the Effects options.

What's Next?

This wouldn't be a beta if it was done, right?

While the core PBR shader is done (meaning basic metalness & roughness behavior), Jon is already looking at putting the last unused texture channel to use for a discrete subsurface scattering map for dielectrics. And of course a version that works with shadows disabled as well will be made as well.

We also really would like to give planets and asteroids a new PBR shader so they too can join in the remastered fun. We've been discussing some of that for a while, and now that the beta is out, we will hopefully be able to start working on that at a more convenient pace.

Then of course there may be some tweaking of post processing effects, adjustments to PBR converted assets made and other little things like that.

Modder Tip:

You should always prepare and test your textures with Post Processing off.

Never try to "balance" your textures to Post Processing enabled.

Feedback

As this is a first release and a beta, we are definitely interested in hearing what you think. The post processing effects in particular are somewhat experimental. We've decided to go with these settings for the first beta, but things may need adjusting yet.

Feel free to leave a message here. You can also just hop onto the Official Sins of a Solar Empire Discord Channel and start a discussion there.

We invite everyone to grab a copy of the mod and give it a try for themselves.

If you turn off shadows, you will fall back to the original shader and all the textures that have been updated to work with the new ones will look all wrong.

Don't worry, it's not going to stay that way. We did want to get the basics out to the public though so modders who want to make the move to PBR can at least start working on it in the meantime, and that non-shadowed shader variant didn't get made in time.
