Deus Ex is one of the best PC games in history, but even it isn't without its faults and shortcomings. Shifter addresses these and then some. Unused game content, buggy scripted events, several completely useless items, and certain design choices that can only be described as "annoying", all fixed (or at least "improved") by this little mod. I started Shifter in 2002 to fix just one of the latter -- the fact that weapons equipped with a laser sight won't turn it on automatically -- and the project has expanded exponentially since then. A few new weapons, some additional uses for existing items, new augmentations, and several fixes for existing Deus Ex bugs all exist in Shifter, along with a new multiplayer component. The mod is so popular it's been featured in Game Informer's July 2007 edition of Mod World; how many Deus Ex mods can say that? (only 3, to be specific) Shifter: "Removing the suck from Deus Ex" since 2002.

I think you should make the ballistic armor and augs passive so that they are only take energy when they are used.
So when you have ballistic armor/protection on, you only lose energy when you are shot.
With the health aug, you only lose energy when it heals you.
With the speed aug, you only lose energy when you're moving.

I also think that you should make it so that items in the belt slots aren't in with the rest of the inventory.
This would allow me to have a plasma rifle so that I can actually carry some other stuff.

I like the idea for the ballistic armour, it seems a bit odd for physical armour to have a finite electrical charge :S

I can't really argue with the point about Ballistic Protection given that I've switched Regeneration to a similar system; however, there still needs to be an energy drain, just not necessarily as severe when not being shot. The problem arises when considering balance issues though; while Ion Storm didn't think everything through with regards to how certain abilities and augs played out, many of them have limitations and odd design choices for very specific reasons. Changing the power consumption rates for Ballistic Protection and any of the other shield-type augs could cause them to become too powerful; conversely, adjusting the rate with the new mechanic is a delecate task, and if not done properly could render the augs useless. That's not to say that I won't consider it, (I already am) but it's not something I can just pop into the mod and forget about.

On that note, I honestly feel like the way the inventory system is now is (mostly) well done; certainly I don't think we need to separate the item belt from the inventory itself, as that was done in order to balance the game. Adding that kind of inventory space expansion, especially since the Plasma Rifle only takes up one slot in the belt, would have serious effects on the game, and not necessarily for the better. It would no doubt make the game EASIER, but easier doesn't mean better. Some of the appeal in Deus Ex comes from having to make hard choices about what stays in your inventory.
