Thousands of years after Blue Planet, the cosmic destroyers once again find themselves at war with a resilient race hell bent on destruction.
Shattered Stars is a fan-made epilogue to Blue Planet and the entire FreeSpace saga, built on the very cutting edge of the FreeSpace 2 Open engine, and is set thousands of years into the future of FreeSpace, overlapping with the timeframe of Mortal Engines, a film adapted from the 2001 novel of the same name by Philip Reeve.
Shattered Stars places a larger emphasis on larger scale dogfights and battles with hundreds of capital ships and thousands of fighters. It is currently under development and will be a standalone and completely free download.
I am Bryan See, lead developer of Shattered Stars.
This is the first article we publish here, since the deleted post (I am sorry for that) deals with the earlier iteration that depends on retail FreeSpace 2 and its Media VPs in order to run. I will try to explain what Shattered Stars is all about, since I have rebooted its development as a fully-fledged standalone total conversion mod.
Recent events on HLP have made me rethink of this mod, namely the release of Starbug’s fleet, which uses today’s navy class system. I never expected this to happen, but I believe this points in the right direction, unlike most of the mods made. Plus, the impending final release of FreeSpace 2 Open 3.8.0 provided all of the features that is going to be utilized by the mod. When it was released, I plan to contribute development of the FreeSpace 2 Open source code to benefit not only this mod, but also others, including their Media VPs and Blue Planet, whose assets were currently taken.
Furthermore, that “release” on GitHub was supposed to be the playable tech demo. However, it does not work properly as planned, and here I am now. :)
Soon after, I decided to make a soft re-start on the development of the game. The demo for Shattered Stars, called Shattered Stars: Annexation, will be released within the year for free. It will consist of about 10 missions, with training missions included.
