A detailed description of the changes made to the Kingdom of Aragon and the Kingdom of Leon and Castile from Stainless Steel 6.4 to Roar of Conquest.

Greetings! Today I will be going over the changes made to the Kingdom of Aragon and the Kingdom of Leon and Castile in Roar of Conquest from Stainless Steel 6.4. As far as factions go, these two kingdoms never did badly for themselves in the early and mid campaign even before I started modding. However, the availability for the early roster, specifically the javelin units, was messy and inconsistent in some cases. Like with many factions in the game, this problem was fixed by making the base javelin units no longer restricted by area of recruitment, or AOE. The biggest changes to the Spanish factions was when their faction-unique gunpowder and pike units became available. Aragon and Leon and Castile now have the distinction of being the first factions in the campaign to be able to field pike-and shot armies with professional troops! Now, enough with the introduction; onward for the Reconquista!

Universal Changes, (Affects All Listed Factions):

The Kingdom of Aragon and the Kingdom of Leon and Castile have very similar rosters, so many of the changes I made affect both factions. Many of the changes were changing AOE for basic early-game units, but the greatest change was in the faction-unique pike and gunpowder units and when they became available. So without further ado, lets get into the details!

1) Arbalesters have had their melee attack increased to 6.

2) Arquebusiers are no longer available from recruitment: this change will make sense later on.

3) Foot Men at Arms can now be recruited for the entire campaign once they are unlocked. They are also no longer restricted by AOE; any castle on the map with the Armory can now recruit them.

4) Halberd Men at Arms are no longer restricted by AOE; any castle on the map with the Armory can now recruit them.

5) Gendarmes are now recruited from the Army Barracks in cities after the Gothic Plate event, (year 1450-1460), rather than the Royal Officer's Academy.

6) Javelinmen are no longer restricted by AOE; any castle on the map with the Garrison Quarters can now recruit them.

7) Light Men at Arms are no longer restricted by AOE; any castle on the map with the Drill Square can now recruit them.

8) Men at Arms are no longer restricted by AOE; any castle on the map with the Earl's Stables can now recruit them.

9) Mounted Arquebusiers are now recruited from the Army Barracks in cities after the Portable Clock event, (year 1510), rather than the Royal Officer's Academy.

10) Sword Militia have had their melee attack increased to 4 and their charge increased to 3, making them a more effective light infantry unit.

11) Sword and Buckler Men have had their melee attack increased to 6 and their charge increased to 4, making them that much more effective in combat. They also now only take 2 turns to recruit instead of 4.

12) Spanish Arquebusiers are now available from Army Barracks in cities after the Matchlock Developed event, (year 1420-1440) instead of the Portable Clock event, (year 1510). Since the common Arquebusier unit that they used to get became available after the Matchlock Developed event, (year 1420-1440), the unique Spanish variant now replaces them at this time period. This change, along with others, helps makes the Spanish campaigns more flavorful and interesting.

13) Tercio Pikemen are now available from the Army Barracks in cities after the Full Plate event, (year 1380-1400) instead of the Military Academy in cities after the Hammer of the Witches event, (year 1486). They have also had their melee attack increased to 6, their charge increased to 5, and their total defense increased to 10.

14) Late Tercio Pikemen are now available from the Army Barracks in cities after the Portable Clock event, (year 1510) instead of the Royal Officer's Academy. Their melee attack has been increased to 6, their charge increased to 5, and their total defense increased to 17.

Kingdom of Aragon

As a faction, Aragon has quite a few faction-unique units that benefit them in the early campaign, but loose out in the later campaign by not being able to recruit late-game feudal units. With my changes, these units are no longer restricted by AOE, which helps make the Aragon campaign interesting and differentiate them from the Kingdom of Leon and Castile.

1) Alforrats are no longer restricted by AOE; any castle on the map with a Stables can now recruit them. A useful light cavalry that hit relatively hard, but can die easily.

2) Almughavars are no longer restricted by AOE; any castle on the map with the Drill Square can now recruit them. They hold the distinction of being the hardest-hitting javelin unit of any Christian faction, and will be a great inclusion in your armies throughout your campaign.

3) Basque Archers are no longer restricted by AOE; any castle on the map with the Archery Range can now recruit them. Better than the average archer at range, but lacking in melee.

Kingdom of Leon and Castile

While not having as unique an early roster as Aragon, Leon and Castile benefit from access to Chivalric Knights in the late campaign, giving their armies a substantial boost to conquer all Iberia.

1) Lusitanian Javelinmen are no longer restricted by AOE; any castle on the map with the Drill Square can now recruit them. A solid javelin unit that also serve as light spearmen.

2) Jinetes are no longer restricted by AOE; any castle on the map with a Stables can now recruit them. A very good skirmish cavalry for peppering down enemy heavy cavalry and infantry.

3) Chivalric Foot Knights can now be recruited for the entire campaign once they are unlocked.

So there you have it, the changes to the Spanish Kingdoms in Roar of Conquest from Stainless Steel 6.4! Like many other factions in the mod, their basic units were fixed so their factions would not be crippled by AOE. In addition, Aragon and Leon and Castile now field professional pike units earlier than any other European faction, (except the Scots), and can use pike-and-shot tactics before any other faction in the game. If you like what you see and would like to conquer Iberia for yourself, you can download the mod here: Roar of Conquest 2.1 Now, go forth and conquer!

No changes for Portuguese? Also, I think that Castile and Leon shouldn't get Lusitanian Javelinmen, so that Portugal may feel a bit more unique.

Funny you should ask; I will be shortly publishing an article about the changes made to the Moorish Caliphate and the Kingdom of Portugal. As for the Lusitanian Javelinmen, they are available for Castile and Leon for balancing purposes, as there are other things to make the Portuguese campaign unique.
