By the name I was expecting it to have some sort of tractor beam, not sure how that would apply ingame anyway.

Fantastic as always.

I think the name comes from the interdictor classification of aircraft. The Tornado GR4 is one of the only remaining aircraft that uses the classification but from WW2 and earlier, it was used to classify aircraft who's role was to fly deep into enemy territory to take out high priority targets, usually meant to disrupt enemy intelligence or logistics (or troop movement, in some cases).

Glad you like the model! It was fairly easy to make after the first TIE Bomber was complete ;)

While I love your model, oh my god that looks so dumb!
The Empire's trying to rule with fear and intimidation, so they order up a new heavy bomber and they get THAT?!
That's hilarious!
That thing looks ****ing ludicrous! You stupid Imperial bastards, the enemy's gonna be laughing their *** off so hard they'll get caught under the thing's rain!
I mean if it was designed so that the pods (I'm guessing they carry ordnance?) were spread out horizontal, kinda like some WWII bombers' engines, then it'd look almost cool, but this is just absurd.
Bloody TIE hosers!
EDIT: Er, 'hoser' is a Canadian slang, guess it'll only make sense to us...

Might I direct you here:

Starwars.wikia.com

Just so we both understand that this is canonized unit ;) You may find it looks dumb but so do many real life aircraft as well. Ever seen some of the early bomber concepts used in WWI? Or heck, even some used in WW2... Blohm & Voss might prove my point ;)

Diseno-art.com

Then there are these, some old and some...more contemporary:

I0.wp.com

S-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com

Cdn-www.cracked.com

I.crackedcdn.com

I.kinja-img.com

I.kinja-img.com

Anyway, my point is that it doesn't have to look pretty to get the job done :) Yes, some of the aircraft I posted were only concepts, and some failed... But others (like the Blohm & Voss) were actually used a fair bit in service.

Oh I know it's a canonized unit, and I'll say you did what you could with it, but it still looks ridiculous.
Actually the Blohm & Voss looks pretty cool, and seems to be part of the inspiration for the original TIE bomber, at least at first glance.
As for the Pancake-plane, however... XD
I just can't get over how 'amazing' that TIE bomber looks.

Oh yes, the "pancake plane" is the most insane design I've ever seen, right after the XF-85 Goblin (the 'squished' jet on the 3rd link).

Both were failed concepts that proved highly unstable in flight... Makes one wonder what the designer was thinking??

Anyway, I don't mind this TIE design so much. It's better than these ones:

Well I could see the middle one as being the Star Wars universe's equivalent of a long range light naval bomber... But yes, I agree that this is kinda better than those.

Yes, in fact the middle one does look quite similar to the Scimitar Assault Bomber, which plays just that role. The Scimitar is way cooler though :)

Its not like its the only bombers the Empire ordered or put into service I mean think of the frogt foot or A10 they aren't exactly pretty well the end result is pretty though.

I imagine whoever greenlights these things dropped the scale model on the floor and hastily glued it back together, but just said "screw it, it's 9:30 on a Friday, and I'm not sending for another copy" and just went with it.

I don't mind the TIE Interdictor as well. I mean, at least you can see where they came from with this design:
"We need to improve the TIE Bomber. So we'll just strap more explosives to it!"

I deeply respect that approach.

The problem is... I have Age of Kings and it doesn't run too well on a 64x OS. There are tricks to make it work, just like Age of Kings...but it's not 100% perfect.

You can buy Galactic Battlegrounds with expansion on GOG. They normally fix the compatibilty problems and if it does not work, they will give you your money back within the first 30 days after the purchase.

I bought it there and it works great for me.

The bug which i encountered most often with old games like Age of Kings, C&C Red Alert and Freespace on Windows 7 systems is that the colors are wrong. What fixed this for me was to end the process explorer.exe before starting the game.

Yep, that's the same thing I do for Age of Kings. It's simple to create a batch file that kills the explorer process when launching AoK. I just find it annoying that i have to do that each time in order for my grass to not appear red... Lol

Reply Good karma Bad karma+2 votes
the_Farseer Author
the_Farseer - - 6,407 comments

Symmetrical, you mean? See, I actually disagree with you there. Humans are programmed to find symmetry appealing but I often think that the asymmetrical designs are cooler for just that reason, especially in the "used universe" aesthetic that Lucas was shooting for. That's what makes the Falcon so cool :)

This is also why villains or monsters are often portrayed with asymmetrical facial features like a battle scar, snaggle tooth, etc. It's instinctively unsettling to look at but by the same token, also captures our attention.

I prefer things being symmetrical sometimes. It has a certain feeling to it that looks, as I said, balanced. Not saying asymmetrical things look unappealing, as they tend to look pretty cool.

Symmetry has a certain harmony to it, yes. That's why that theory was used for the prequels quite a bit...because it was a more harmonious time before the Civil War. Think of the Naboo ships, specifically...or even a lot of the CIS ships too.

Description

Building on the success of the TIE/sa Bomber design, the TIE Interdictor is a deadly siege machine that's capable of delivering a devastating payload. In addition to quadrupling the ordinance tubes of the original design, the TIE Interdictor has also been armed with duel-linked, light laser cannons on the chin of the main fuselage.

In RotM, this heavy version of the TIE Bomber will carry proton torpedoes, rather than the lighter concussion missiles of it's predecessor.
