indeed much better, felt the original to be among the worst models of the AT-AT in any SW Game.

what makes the original so horrible?

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote

Texture is very...splotchy, UV unwrapping is horrible (as with all original EaW models), it's too thin/scrawny for a convincing AT-AT model.

I will say to the credit of the employees at Petroglyph though that the AT-AT's animations were great!

Hell YES!
i've been waiting someone to create a new AT-AT model for EaW.
i hope it gets high poly, it deserves to be a good model like the star destroyer

Seeing as the leg joints are just 8 sided cilinders it's not that high poly.

Its about 2000 tris right now. Anything much higher for an RTS is excessive. So, for the purpose it was created for it is indeed high poly. The true improvement is in the texture though. The original UV unwrapping in EaW was horrible... And the at at texture, specifically was bad.

I like all your models but this AT-AT looks very rustic maybe? in the movies the at-at seems to have skinny legs and as Geroenimo say, the legs joints need to be more round that one looks like a cylinder it remember me the rogue squadron for N64 hehe

Anyways nice work, its a better model and obviously a much better texture.

In the movies the ATATs were quite stocky, actually. The game's representation is too skinny. As for the leg joints, they are 8-sided which is fairly high-poly for a single RTS unit. I'm glad you pike the model overall though.

Hmm...gonna be a hard choice between this or the NR's airspeeder.

This one is good for the whole family, I guess. And your neighbors and their families. Be a great way to get around. Could you imagine pulling up to church/school/work in one of these?

Oh, the skin, model, and texture look better. I think, overall, the rather...crisp (if you know what I mean) look to all of your work is great.

Maybe it's unfixable but there is a bug/glitch. When you use deploy stormtroopers the head can turn 360 degrees, so when you have enemies behind you the head will turn around.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+2 votes
the_Farseer Author
the_Farseer - - 6,407 comments

Yeah, I think that's an inherent glitch with the deploy troopers ability... Not sure there is a way to fix it.

You could eliminate the deploy troopers ability and instead allow it to act as a troop carrier. I saw the in the PR mod and loved it. Always thought the static deployment feature was kind of annoying.

the_Farseer Author
the_Farseer - - 6,407 comments

The thing is though that this wouldn't fix the head rotation issue because the animations required for transports are inherently the same as the one used for deploy troopers...so the "breaks," if you will, would be the same.

while it is a good texture and improved bump, the texture itself is very clean in appearance. It is missing the grit and dirt factor. You do incorporate the metaal wearing, but these things are giant war machines, there should be some oil stains, blast marks, and just some overall ventilation smoke scorching and dirt on the armor. I highly doubt these things would be cleaned on a regular basis.

The lack of these elements (which can be seen in petro's versionL does lend to more comic book feel rather than a realistic style. Not bad, just different

You've mentioned that about my textures before but I really don't see what you're seeing. The problem I have with Petroglyph's textures is that the dirt and grime that they've added doesn't make sense...as in, it's just plastered on there almost like an overlay layer.

Even dirt and grime have to make sense. Dirt isn't going to collect on a flat or smooth surface but it will in the nooks and crannies, or the spaces between armor plating.

Scarring and scratches are more random, obviously because they just happen wherever the projectiles or shrapnel hit against it. Of course, there will always be natural weathering around the leading edges and corners of everything as well but on metal surfaces like this, those areas will wear down to shiny metal and should be white, not blackened or rough splotches.

Two last points here... Bear with me. First, you have to also remember that in RotM, every single vehicle has damage alternates. That is, the lower the HP it has...the more damaged the texture gets. My design philosphy, therefore is: start out cleaner than usual so the damage alt looks all the more worn out and beaten.

Second, and this is really a very minor point, the screenshots are taken from the ALO viewer and not in-game. What that means is that the ALO viewer renders textures on meshes much more poorly than the game and a lot of resolution is lost...and so too are the fine details (like scratches).

Now I fully realize that my textures are a bit overly gritty, but that is done in purpose to reflect the severity and desperation of our era, for I'm attempting to use textures to portray the feeling of the times, so I'm not directly comparing mine to yours, and you know I adore your work and respect you as much as Warb, so I'm only discussing in the sense of artist to artist in comparison to Lucas Arts creations which we are both trying so hard to reproduce.

That being said, here is what i see when I look at some images:

Img4.wikia.nocookie.net

Tveye79.files.wordpress.com

Img3.wikia.nocookie.net

Img2.wikia.nocookie.net

Now some of these have more detailing than others, but from the movie shots you can see discolorization on the armor plating. You can notice smudges and stains also. This is how Lucas Arts portrayed these, and while there is nothing wrong with what you have made, these are just things I notice that are not as noticeable on your version. Also, it might help a little (to resemble the movies) if the color was slightly adjusted to be a tint more grey.

I am only pointing out these visual differences, you know I love your work :)

Ah, that is called cell-shading...very posterized. It works very well in some games...not so well in others. Partly this is due to the ALO Viewer and how it renders models (see my reply to Strobe above...bottom part).

Description

I've always thought the Imperial walkers in this game never looked imposing enough, especially the ATAT. The original's legs were too short and skinny... It seemed like you could just walk up and push it over. While in the movies, the ATAT walkers appear hulking and...well, sturdy. That said, aside from improving the mesh and texture, I beefed up the legs and made the whole thing a little bit chunkier to hopefully make it more of a true war machine.

The two side-mounted cannons aren't there because this was taken from the ALO viewer, which doesn't show coded hardpoint models. I've done it this way so that those two turrets can pitch independently of the head rotation.
