they are referred to as warriors. but in game there are several different types. spitters, warriors, tigers, elite tigers, royal bugs and x-bugs which are four or five times the size of regular warriors. quite a few more.
I know this, I have played the games. ttoo22's post gave me a few Ideas that's all.

of course not, because supcom does not compute true melee, but
i dont know why you dont just make a super short ranged beam weapon to fake a melee weapon, hell, you could even make an invisible explosion happen on the end of a limb and make it look like a blade attack.
but apparently it is not possible to make short ranged weapons....
replicate the bomb bouncers attack or the spider grenade without it dying..
