Here you can see the detail of British General's Bodyguard unit.
Notice that general's coat is slightly lighter.
Historically, a typical officer's uniform of the period saw significantly less wear and tear than that of the men under his command. In addition officers frequently replaced their coats - a luxury unknown to the lower ranks, especially beyond early stages of the war.
