Victory Reborn: HMS Hood fires on Soviet ships off the Humber Estuary.

A moment immortalised in art, this painting hangs pride of place in the National Art Gallery in London, capturing the opening moments of the Battle of the Humber. It is said that a shadowy figure can be seen in the smoke billowing from the funnels; supposely Lord Nelson himself.

Background

May, 1950. The East Coast of the United Kingom is on high alert, as MI6 reports that a large Soviet naval force is crossing the North Sea, with orders to raid selected towns and shipping lanes; a textbook terror raid, reminiscent of similar German attacks in the First World War. Large parts of the Home Fleet and RAF Coastal Command are mobilised to hunt down and intercept these Soviet warships.

May 17th. The efforts buy some time, but the Soviets bully through the screen and are sighted off the mouth of the Humber Estuary. The Russian commander, Admiral Isakov onboard the cruiser Kalinin, ordered his force into formation. Two minutes later, the Sevastopol, the ship next in line to the Kalinin suddenly erupts into flame, as its' magazine is pierced by shell fire.

On the British side of things, the whole interception here was a happy accident. HMS Hood was on her way to Scotland for a long overdue refit, escorted by the cruisers HMS Jamaica and HMS Liverpool, and numerous destroyers. Although outnumbered, the British commander, Vice-Admiral Harwood immediately ordered his taskforce to engage, hoping to buy time for the rest of the fleet to arrive.

(Summary of Battle here)
The Soviet fleet was forced to withdraw before they were boxed in by the RN.
Aftermath

The battle was a disaster for the Soviet navy. When Stalin heard of the news, he flew into a terrible rage, and ordered that all those responsible for organising the attack be shot or worse. The Soviet surface fleet spent much of the rest of the war collecting barnacles at their piers, as the submarine fleet took their role.

For the newly formed Allied Nations, the Battle of the Humber was a huge Morale boost, and the crews of the surviving ships were hailed as 'Heroes of Democracy'. It was not without a cost though; four destroyers and HMS Liverpool were sunk during the battle, and Hood was out of action for nearly two years.

=================================

As indicated my the title, this is a bash at writing a piece of history for the mod. I've been thinking about it for a few weeks, and scratched this together from my random trains of thought.

Also, here is a link to help illustrate this point

This kind of thing can be welcome as fanfiction, or, if accepted, lore for Paradox on the wiki- linked to in the summary tab.

(Not saying its bad here, though.)

It looks interesting.

Thanks Galgus. As noted, it's a work in progress, mainly due to my lack of knowledge on naval strategy and tactics preventing me from working out how the battle would have played out.

Actually, he sent me the brief of it by message, and I added it to my World War II manuscript whole cloth.

Yeah; I've been trying to expand upon the idea, make it like something you'd actually see in an encyclopedia.
