With a little help of the Reseach Station the Modular Destroyers can build platforms.
Most argue it's a waste of firepower and it is a reasonable concern. But if you want a counter argument, you can miss one destroyer's turret and still exceed in firepower over a regular Destroyer, plus the ability to build a nest of double ion platforms can be seen as a firepower multiplier instead. That or a distraction of incoming fire away from the destroyer and onto the platforms.
Nevertheless it's not at all expected to be widely used, though it's nice that the possibility is there. It's also a little reminder that such thing as a platform even exists (well how many years ago have you built your last weapon platform?).

Well then you'll be the one surprising people with platform MDDs in a multiplayer, because no one else will expect it.

No they won't. No Vaygr primarily combat ship will have the ability to produce platforms. This is a part of intentional asymmetry.
You're right, I was trying to refer to balance, not necessarily symmetry.
I used em about a few months ago when I last played homeworld, need to get back to that.
I love Destroyers, especially Modular ones, and I'd always build a few platforms to guard my RU patch, so this seems like a good match.
I used them in my last game as the Vaygr, Love hyperspace platforms.
