Hey I don't want to insult anybody, but really people, what's wrong with your imagination? First there's guy who say that the engines looks like pair of balls and then there are all the very bad ideas where to place this thing. If you don't believe me, just look at this thing in Photoshop:
........actually, the bottom-right one doesn't look too bad I think. The problem would be figuring out how to fill in the bottom turret slot like you did with the engines, and still maintain that streamlined look.
My suggestion... a redo. I suggest using two thinner prongs instead one, angled slightly away from each other in a V shape (like the fins of many fish), and angled a little more rearward than what you have here. Actually, if this version was angled a bit more rearward, you probably wouldn't have the genitalia comments then. But I still think the two would look better anyway.
-Wouldn't it be way too anime then? I know what you mean and you're probably right that it would look better, but the image in my head just screams "japanese".
-Wait, I'll make 08 so you can see it yourself.
-I didn't even try to make the modules animated now. I did about two times before and I don't want to repeat it any time soon. Not for this ship anyway. Believe me, it won't work. I'm saying there's a chance just because even I haven't seen it in any other mod, I think it might be possible eventually.
Module animation is definitly a no-go. You can't do it. The subsystem won't recognize ship states as - oh woe - they only work for ships and are not passed on to the subsystem ingame.
I really dunno about this... looks like it sticks out too far to me (HS window will have to be changed) and given that, I'd just use something more streamlined. No hiigaran ship really has anything protruding at an odd angle. That's a vaygr trait but not something that fits the hiigaran concept.
That's why I said "tricks" in the comment of one of the previous pictures. Of course I know all that when I tried it several times before and when I was looking for answers all over the internet. Your comment is making me want to show you what I mean, but I don't have a time for it now.
Two things:
-Oh yes they do, the very defense frigate, this is basically almost the same piece of the ship, except it doesn't close.
-Hiigaran Destroyer does look like a WW2 battleship, we all know that. Jesus it even has the waterlines: Img828.imageshack.us
So if we basically have a flying naval ship there, which needs to have the sticking defense field thing out of it, why just don't make it to look like the fin of orca or just the ship keel fin: Upload.wikimedia.org I've made some ugly thing to look natural, it probably gets the naval ship analogy too far, this really does look like a ship now, but at least it doesn't look that bad.
Another thing is that it is not something else, it's not some kind of anonymous pod attached to the ship, but the recognizable defense field generator.
What makes you think that I don't know anything and that I didn't thing about the matter for many days from as many points of view as possible. Nothing I do is just because I liked it, it's always thought through from all the angles. I should start to be much more confident in what am I saying, because lately everyone started to reply to me like I was an idiot who's just guessing. So once again and this time better:
-Defense field - defense field. Everywhere the similar device for fast recognition
-Aesthetics: the nice orca fin
-ship analogy: it's already there, I just used it
those are three particular reasons why it does look the way it does.
maybe a dumb question but isn't it possible to animate sub sythems with an animated and (allmost) invisible dummy object on the main hull?
if so I would make the defense field simply closer to that of the original defense field friagte (or like allready said V style). longer and folding out on activation (or when entering the combat if it's impossible to animate abilities like that)
Very logical idea, but no, unfortunatelly it doesn't work like that. You can also see it in game on the Vaygr Carrier resource drop-off platform.
If you really want it animated, I could try it after all, but the way it would be done would affect the shape of the subsystems, the concept would have to be different.
The way I currently present things only makes me look stupid, undecided and unconfident, like I don't know what I'm doing, it has to end. This is not only reaction to you Mololu, it's to all of this here.
well there was the battleship mod for the original HW and that was actually fun but no dont make everything atmospheric naval looking. only other thing i can think of for the defense field would be kinda like WW 2 bridge area of the ships and it doubles as defense field and the fire control modules just less bonuses for the boosts to firepower. doesnt need all the masts and depending on hows designed can work for bottom or top
I vote for not to keep it. It looks interesting and might bear an interesting idea that you should pursue - but not this way. Look at the ships shade. It is a straight line on the top and somewhat gently bent on the underside. Like the side of an egg you might say. So - every line is flowing from side to side.
The fin you added, on the other hand, is strongly vertical. Thats why it bites with the ship as the shape of that fin just plain X-crosses the ships flowing lines. Having those fins bend a little over, to match the ships shade a little more, might help. Either direction might be sufficient for that: It might lean forward like a spike, or backwards like your "japanese" anime-fin. Also try adjusting the length - a short but sturdy thorn (Quite like the bridges at the Enterprice/Voyager - yes i sometimes watch that) might be an interesting alternative.
Scrap the idea if you cant find either of those options appealing.
actually if not for the destroyer my idea with the defense field/fire control tower could somewhat be the basis for a new type of cap ship. a task force command ship maybe a battle cruiser type at least in size and maybe more armor but not as much firepower but more support than frontline. your choice of course
Pouk, I missed a whole bunch here, but first thanks for the texture change on the extra engines.
On to the Defense Field Module.
-There is a manga/anime series called Yukikaze. In it there is an aircraft called the Reaper, or Super-Sylph, that orbits at an altitude well above the dog-fight battle and collects data for HQ to analyse.
It has a sensor boom that is very similar to what it looks like you are trying here.
I'll try and upload a pic or two and a link to a youtube clip of it as reference material.
I only write all this as encouragement.
I like the idea, it's a shame it can't be animated but I accept that.
I think it works well as seen in the video you posted.
My only suggestion would be to make the fin narrower and more like a blade to be honest.
I don't know if you've deliberatley moved away from a 'thin-blade' look to reduce the possibilty of anime appearance or not.
The design ethic you stick to is totally your choice though.
And p.s. - I know it may be hard to not get frustrated at some comments left here, just remember- it's the internet, there is no intelligence pre-requisite to post here, only each person's own built-in spam filter.
Some people just don't have one unfortunately.
interesting design....
hmmmm I'm not shure keep it or not... but I like it =)
I think the it should be put somewhere else. It looks more like Defense Module Genitals where it is now. :P
Sorry but that description is not really new, read the comments of the previous two pictures.
What about on the bottom under the engines facing rearwards on that angled bit?

I can only say one think.... lol
........actually, the bottom-right one doesn't look too bad I think. The problem would be figuring out how to fill in the bottom turret slot like you did with the engines, and still maintain that streamlined look.
The bottom-right one is definitelly not happening.
Guess it would better suit the orca fin style on top, in the middle slot instead.
It wasn't meant to be taken literally. And it definitally wouldn't look better on top.
personnaly I think it can be set in the rear slot
I won't put it on the rear slot.

BTW, did you manage get the module animated?

Anyway, I did slightly edit it.

I did lol at the comment i recieved off pouk yesterday
but i dont agree, i think you should put it on the side :D
The engines?
No, the big spine thing, when i get home photoshop shall be opened
Wait a minute, I'll make a video to make things clear.
well there was the battleship mod for the original HW and that was actually fun but no dont make everything atmospheric naval looking. only other thing i can think of for the defense field would be kinda like WW 2 bridge area of the ships and it doubles as defense field and the fire control modules just less bonuses for the boosts to firepower. doesnt need all the masts and depending on hows designed can work for bottom or top
hey,you forgot the destroyer update 3,you only made the 1,2 and 4,were is the 3?
3 was there all the time, longer than 4, but no one actually noticed it (?). I deleted it to avoid more ***** comments.

There's a new video about destroyer modules.

Some people just don't have one unfortunately.
Here's a pretty pixelated youtube link to the Reaper, jump to 2:08 if you don't have much time;
Here's some pic's of a model of the Reaper;

You can see the Sensor Boom in dark grey,
don't know if any of this helps though.
The people want balls!
