Raising the Bar is a mod based off of the idea of amalgamating the earliest concepts of Half-Life 2 into a coherent story. This mod is not a leak-fix, nor is it a concept art recreation gallery; it will be a full story with inspiration from the old material as well as our own ideas of how to make it all fit together.

We have received several more members on our team, but we still need more!

Posted by on

Good day everyone, I hope you enjoyed our Gargantua and Eli's Lab update a few weeks ago!

The previous help wanted post we put up went well; we added several new members to our team as a result. However, we still need more skills to make development run smoothly.

Coders- We need more coders! (Although I work with people more experienced in coding than myself, I still do not know the extent to which coding covers when it comes to models, animations, etc., so please bear with me in this first bit. -Ambient) We are going to be including many new characters and scenes into the mod, and we need good coding to provide their backbone. This includes npc rigging, weapon coding, particle coding, and others. We prefer experienced individuals when it comes to the coding side of the mod, as we don't want to have to spend more of their time than we have to, although anyone who does send us an offer should bear in mind that we will be creating many new npc's and weapons, and most of them will need a coding overhaul or completely new code to boot.

So far, the coding side of the mod is the biggest issue, and it is very important for us that these requirements are met. If any shortages arise in the future, we will most certainly post a news article here for you all to examine. Besides the fact that any prospective coder obviously needs to know how to code proficiently, we also love it when we acquire individuals who communicate their thoughts and opinions well towards the rest of the team. Communication is key when making a large mod like this, and so far we have been blessed with a great group and we hope to receive even more thinkers as time goes on.
A big shout out to the community, you guys are awesome! A few weeks ago, shortly after our last media post we made it to the top 20 active mods on Mod DB and stayed there for a few days. We can't thank you guys enough for your support and we hope to keep amazing you with more maps, models, sounds, and textures!

I know how you feel.
After reading some coding articles on some site I said to myself:
"I can do it if I just try, and take my time"
Believe me or not with some supporting friends and some help from the VDC
I can actually do some coding for my game/mod I have done a bit now and I am proud of what I have done.
If you look around on the web maybe you'll be as lucky as me and learn some coding like me : )

Thank you for the tip! Do you have any good sites that will help us learn a bit of programing as you have? :)

I have picked up stuff while working with friends and working from the web. I can recommend the VDC they got a big section about what you might need to know: Developer.valvesoftware.com

I also stumbled upon some Russian pages that worked great to work with.
You can find some of it here: Developer.valvesoftware.com
And there is interlopers: Interlopers.net
All this has helped me to get to the point where I am today. I'm still learning and that's the best thing I know. Hope this helped, because it helped me.

VDC, as GamerDude27 mentioned, is a excellent place to learn from. Tinkering with little projects from the coding tutorial section and searching the forms for answers to my problems helped me a lot. While your learning its also good to deviate and trace functions that look interesting back to their origin to figure out what they are used for.

NPC coding can be tricky, and you'll have to learn Sources system of Tasks, Conditions, Animation Events. Once you learn those you can make your NPC do all sorts of cool things.

I know how painful the Beta code can be sometimes... so many outdated stuff...

Anyway I wish you luck on finding help :)

I would've so applied if I had more free time. It's nice how you guys are reaching towards the community and are open, all like that, I strongly believe this is the most adequate policy.
Perhaps I could still be of use to someone in their beginner's experience with coding, I remember it how when I started working with code, I had nobody to ask basic, simple things that did matter most back then.
If anyone's willing they could add me on Steam (search for the same name) and I hope I could help with something.

Don't get me wrong, i do apriciate it when people try to do so much in there mod. But, we see it nearly daily here on Moddb, that teams/mods die because of the fact that they needed to many skilled developers, which they never did find. Or they did, just to never hear of them again.
I don't want to sound negative but i have a lot of experience in this field, and i know there are not many modders around anymore in the HL2 universe, that are skilled anough and willing to put in that much time that is needed, as which is with this project.
Best is to see what you can make, with the team you have, and make with that your mod. Otherwise is the change that you will release your mod very small.

a fellow mapper/modder,
Leon
