Modular Combat is a role-playing shooter based in the Half-Life universe. There are over 50 modules that can be upgraded at any level, in any combination. Modules give combatants amazing abilities such as flying, teleporting, spawning minions, and shooting flechettes or energy balls.

Post news Report RSS Modular Combat Fixed!

I've been craving Modular Combat for many months now and i couldn't bear to wait for Modular Combat 2 to come out so i thought i'd take a crack at fixing it.

Well i managed to do just that! and not only did i do it, i wrote a batch file that completely automates the task for you! (damn thing took me over 8 hours to write and debug).

To use the fix, you need the following installed:

  • Team Fortress 2 (the batch file uses a tool in TF2)
  • Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
  • Half-Life 2: Episode 2

These 3 are required for the game to work flawlessly. If you don't own Half-Life 2: Episode 2 then a couple of enemies will show up as huge red error models. If you plan on playing the upcoming Half-Life 3, i suggest you get Half-Life 2: Episode 2 because Half-Life 3 apparently will continue the storyline. Episode 2 costs $8 on Steam and you can get it here.

If you dont have Team Fortress 2 (it's free and won't cost you a penny) or don't want to install Team Fortress 2 then you'll have to do the manual fix. I haven't started on the video tutorial for the manual fix yet but once its ready, it can be found here. I also have to rewrite the server tutorial, so i'll do that tomorrow too.

To run the fix do the following:

  1. Download the zip on the downloads page.
  2. Extract the contents of the zip someplace on your hard drive.
  3. Double click "Fix Modular Combat.bat".
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Wait. The whole process will take several minutes to complete and if you close the window, you'll have to start it all over again.

In addition, to give everyone a chance to play i put up 6 5 servers. I don't know if my server box can handle this many and if i can even host more than this, but we'll see how it handles it.

Each server is different:

Vanilla Maps Only: These are maps included with HL2DM and ModCom so you dont have to download anything. Gamemode change by vote is enabled.

Custom Maps Only: These are maps i converted to work with Modular Combat but you will have to download them but through FastDL. Gamemode change by vote is enabled.

Mixed Maps: A mix of all Vanilla and Custom maps so sometimes you'll have to download through FastDL. Gamemode change via vote is enabled.

Coop PvM Only: A mix of all Vanilla and Custom maps so sometimes you'll have to download through FastDL. Gamemode change via vote is disabled.

PvPvM Only: A mix of all Vanilla and Custom maps so sometimes you'll have to download through FastDL. Gamemode change via vote is disabled.

Yeah, all in Canada because they're all on the same machine. But they're at a datacenter that has really good infrastructure.

I made a mistake in the syntax of the batch file, so download and run it again.

Yeah they were many broken textures and some weapons. Where can we download it directly ? It's not here yet on moddb.

I don't have HL2 Deathmatch, how will this affect me?

Majorly, you'll see missing textures and models everywhere. It's very likely unplayable for you. If you have HL2, you might be able to get away with it, but my fix doesnt work with HL2, it works with HL2DM and doing the manual fix is very complicated.

Maybe I'll just wait for the Alien Swarm version.

Last year some reporters toured Valve and they were taking pictures on their tour and they got a snapshot of Valve's JIRA project tracker and on it, it said Half-Life 3. So they are working on it, they just aren't hyping it cause hyped things tend to die (eg. Spore).

Version 3 of the fix now includes a fully automated installation system. It doesn't matter if your games are located in custom library paths, they will be found! I uploaded the fix to Moddb, but it takes them a few hours to approve it and since its a holiday ... this will likely take much longer.

So i also uploaded it to the Modular Combat website. You can get it at Modularcombat.net
