In the Noble Brightness of the near future, there is only peace.
The year is 2180. A small colony of humans have established themselves in the far away reaches of the inner rim. But contact with Earth has never been established. The United Planets stand alone against an increasingly inhospitable sector, alone against the infinite darkness. And it is not just the local fauna they must fight.
As with any large enough group of people, they began to segregate themselves from one another. A rigid caste system split the populace, and in the twenty years hence its institution, relations have only soured. Tensions have reached their peak, and hostilities have erupted on the outer colony Howoz.
And there is another, far darker threat, looming to corrupt them all.

Liberator is ultimately a story about the, erm, political dissidents from an Earth that became united, and Socialist. Altogether about two billion souls were ejected, and sent headlong into space without any real care. Along the way the ship that carried the poor, unfortunate souls was struck by random asteroids, causing a significant part of the ship's computer systems to be compromised, as well as a decent chunk of the population being split from the main ship. When the remaining people crash-landed on Vel'Inak, a nearly inhospitable place full of cold mountains and chilly valleys, they were forced to either use science or die. Basically for the first decade or so scientific progress was paramount to survival, and the people put aside whatever differences they had to create technological wonders that were merely the stuff of science fiction on Earth. Having established themselves against the elements, they finally looked towards getting off the hostile rock they were stranded on, and sent out ships over the next forty-year period to other planets, those being Ziris, the first, Regganus, the metropolis, Howoz, the city, and Astinda, the frontier. They created a government to rule themselves, an economy to pay themselves, and a military to defend themselves, learning from the lessons of the past to make way for the future.

TL,DR: Space Libertarians with five planets survive in a very StarCraft-esque scenario.

The 'Astley' 128mm Howitzer

Feature

Jayborino wanted base defences. I'll give him base defences. . .

The 'Astley' is the product of a decade of refinement. It is a finely-tuned gun platform armed with a 128 milimetre cannon that can fire at extremely long ranges.

The .grp of an 'Astley' howitzer

The 128mm's main feature is its range - this monster has a range of 100! This means it can fire clear across most maps, given it has the line of sight. And it hits hard, too: 400 damage, increasing by 33 with each Ground Weapons upgrade. Suffice to say, prudent commanders will want to upgrade these with haste.

A row of 128mm's opens fire on approaching xenos

These howitzers sure pack a punch! However, their main drawback is their incredibly large minimum range of 10. This means that anything than can attack the 'Astley' can't be shot into oblivion back. The 'Astley' also cannot target airborne or voidborne units, so anti-air is still left up to Stormmarines and Escorts.

The minimum range of the 'Astley's is their downfall

Another limiting feature of the howitzers is their reload time. The howitzers take over three times the time for a Siege Mode Siege Tank to reload. Careful timing and precise bombardments is key with these, as one bad case of overkill can undo an infantry push.

But if you need an answer to the swarms of xenos and the hordes of conscripts, the 'Astley' 128mm howitzer has got the cure for you!

Also, a video showcasing them in action: Youtube.com

There you have it: the newest addition to the Federate arsenal. How's that for a defencive building, Jay?

And yeah. It's named after him.
