The replacement for Yingshanosaurus has arrived, Huayangosaurus taibai!

Posted by on

Species: H.taibaii

Animal Class: Small

Standard Containment Procedures:

Groups of up to six (6) H.taibaii individuals are to be kept within containment pens featuring a minimum floor area of eight thousand (8000) square meters. These containment pens are to feature fencing of low classification, however due to the armament possessed by H.taibaii individuals it is recommended that fencing made of rope, mesh or other materials considered ‘delicate’ is not utilised for the containment of H.taibaii. The fencing for H.taibaii containment areas is to be checked twice weekly for any damage by assigned maintenance staff.

H.taibaii containment areas are to be a mix of wooded marshland and open woodland with the marshland areas to feature at least two (2) flowing bodies of water with active populations of freshwater molluscs, small to medium sized fresh water crustaceans and waterborne foliage to provide for the full dietary needs of H.taibaii individuals in containment. The substrate in the ‘marsh’ sections of H.taibaii containment pens should consist primarily of soft soils with harder substrates making up the more forested areas away from the marsh sections of a containment pen. H.taibaii individuals are to also be fed thirteen point five (13.5) kilograms of plant matter a day with this amount being lessened during the Spring and Summer where foliage in the containment area is viable for browsing by H.taibaii individuals.

Recall procedures for H.taibaii individuals follow standard Class C Thyreophoran Containment Procedures. Usage of lethal force can be approved by the owning parks board of directors should H.taibaii individuals become aggressive and pose an immediate threat to civilian or staff life, however this is often discouraged as H.taibaii individuals often breach containment accidentally with little to no intent to harm civilians or staff unless agitated by them.

History & Description:

H.taibaii would normally be considered a standard early example of Stegosaurians from the Dashanpu formation measuring at five point one (5.1) meters in a straight line and weighing in at one thousand one hundred (1100) kilograms it has all the standard features of a Dashanpu Stegosaur, with thin plates running in symmetrical pairs down its back, two pairs of thagomizers on the end of a long and flexible tail and a pair of large shoulder mounted spikes. All of these standard features however are offset by the evolutionary melting pot that H.taibaii is. Starting with the more openly obvious features like its near Mamenchisaur-like tail club something which has no identifiable function as its positioning at the tip of the tail of H.taibaii makes it near unusable in combat due to the thagomizers effectively intercepting anything it would come into contact with. Working forwards from the tail club the next immediately identifiable feature of H.taibaii are the vaguely Ankylosaur-like osteoderms found on the upper portion of its body which continue up the animals neck until the head is reached, alongside these osteoderms there are smaller present on the animals flanks in even rows. The final immediately noticeable feature of H.taibaii externally is its arms, while Stegosauria is a group of animals with exceptionally well-muscled forelimbs H.taibaii combines this standard trait with near abnormal arm length. This gives H.taibaii not only a much more menacing appearance but also an immensely different gait to the majority of other Stegosaurian Dinosaurs.

In terms of behaviour H.taibaii is a relatively reclusive and nervous animal, emphasized by the relatively large group size H.taibaii has for a Stegosaur, most likely due to its diminutive size in an ecosystem dominated by animals like Y.shangyouensis. As such it is incredibly easy to startle H.taibaii individuals if they are not aware that a person is nearby, this has resulted in a total of [REDACTED] staff deaths from thagomizers impacts. These deaths have encouraged the usage of gates that make an audible sound when opening and closing in H.taibaii containment pens to alert the animals present that a member of staff is entering the enclosure and that they are under no threat, this ‘sound training’ has even resulted in several parks claiming their H.taibaii populations react positively to the sounds produced by gate alarms as they have started associating it with feeding with one park housing their fifth generation of H.taibaii claiming that this positive reaction has allowed the staff to start directly interacting with H.taibaii individuals allowing them to perform health checks without the need to sedate and remove the animal from containment first.

At a meagre one star H.taibaii is a fairly standard and well known animal in parks globally, however its unique arms have earned it an unintended bit of fame as the icon for the World Armwrestling League, alongside this several brands of protein supplement that promote larger arm muscles use H.taibaii as their mascot.
