The goal of this mod is to bring back the units from the original Homeworld into the Homeworld 2 engine, with high quality texture and polycount detail. The campaign and animatics from the original game will also be included.
An old test with normal maps, and Cnlpepper Shader 2.0, the new textures are seen here on the scout, but this idea was rejected due to incompatibility issues.
The official release would only use vanilla shaders.
Looks pretty, but vanilla is not bad too, for game released 15 years ago on dx8.1 it looks still nice compared to other space rts
There's really not a lot of space rts' to compare to, though.
Well there are few, but none of them is even close to homeworld thats sadly true
But I was just talking about graphics
Yeah, they are still spread out over the decade since the game out, and they're either not that much younger than the game, or simply on a different scale.
Star Wolves, for example, seems relatively comparable, from memory, but, pretty small. On the other hand, if Sword of The Stars had similar graphics, the late game loading times would be unplayable.
Of course, there's a certain reason I can only think of these two at the moment.
Oh man, Sword of the Stars 2 is just...Amazing graphics wise. I dont think there will be a space RTS to beat that level. Shame about the actual game though, Albeit there was a new patch a few days ago. The new features they implemented arent bad at all but the game, on a technical level just gets in your way.
Heres hoping the Homeworld HD reboots will be better.
Aaand I've just learned of the official HD remake of the game. I don't know whether I should worship you, or hate your guts with a passion.
Time will tell, dont forget that game is made by gearbox, company that released aliens: colonial latrines into world
But also Borderlands and Brothers in Arms, and I don't remember hearing much **** over those two.
Depends on how long it'll be in development, I guess.
Don't worry I bet they are going to do a good job.
Well, Gearbox had the Homeworld IP for a while after acquiring it from THQ, after the latter company went bankrupt. But they simply weren't sure how they would go about remaking this series; Homeworld was a LEGEND.
They had evidently been pacing about, until they found a small, independent game studio by the name of "Blackbird Interactive", which had a number of prominent members of the former Homeworld development teams employed there, as well as several original founders of Relic Entertainment.
Prior to being approached by Gearbox, Blackbird Interactive had been working on a spiritual successor to Homeworld, called "Shipbreakers". Gearbox offered them the opportunity to be the primary developers behind the HD Remakes of Homeworld, which was certainly a wise, sensible choice by Gearbox; who better to develop the remakes than the original geniuses themselves? Gearbox even granted permission for Blackbird to turn Shipbreakers into a full-fledged Homeworld title.
And now we come to the present day. Things are looking up so far, and Gearbox apparently gave positive commentary on the FX Mod for Homeworld 2, Puu.sh
And according to an email that the FX team received from Gearbox, they are encouraging the improvement of mod support for the remakes of both games:
