Resolution is too low to put such a detailed background.
Why dont you try to draw something like vanilla backgrounds where shapes are vague and colours have high saturation?

Because I have no experience painting.

Ehi, but Velo is really skilled and his drawing style is so close to the original game skyboxes.

It's beautiful if a bit low on the resolution side of things.

If you recreated the stars it may work quite nicely

I think the problem is not so much...that it's low res, it's that the image is 90% visible, 10% black space. The ratio needs to be closer to 50% visible, 50% space for it to be more acceptable...
Maybe that'd make no difference, I dunno.

Right now the texture is 50% black space 50% nebula. You realize that's half the map, right? :P

You misunderstand, I'm saying it's okay to have nebulous backgrounds, but the actual nebula/detail should be smaller, or less prominent, would somewhat hide the low detail...of course it'd just be better if Homeworld 2 would just let us import high quality backgrounds and be done with it.

Couldnt you try to blur the background image? I remember that the backgrounds in homeworld are really blurred, which in my opinion enhanced the foreground much more than if all would have been in high res.
Also, i believe that you don't notice the low res if there aren't to many details.

No HW2 skyboxes are specially rendered based on color data from a .tga image file, hence vertex color rendering.

People have created "megalith" skyboxes in HW2 for use with high resolution images. ...

I tried to find exactly which mod, but now I'm tired of looking.

HW2 Blue Planet is the only mod that has done this to my knowledge, sadly the shaders for the skybox do not work in our mod.

I'd recommend dropping all stars from the background texture and use the HW2 style of adding stars after the fact via coordinates. I find it gives a better looking result, not to mention a lower polygon count on the background.

Apart from the stars, it looks great.

Figure it out on your own is all I'm going to say. We've never supported anyone who has extracted the mod.

Description

People were complaining about maps being too dark or boring. Well I've started experimenting again with the background builder. It's rather depressing, really. This is the highest resolution you can effectively push the renderer, unfortunately, as it uses vertex coloring to make the actual backgrounds. Homeworld 2 gets around this by making their backgrounds highly stylized, like concept art, and thus is much lower in detail while retaining a definitive artistic style.

It's Reach, by the way.
