I thought the Mako was just a little corvette, a long range siege ship doesn't seem to fit the description well, IMO anyway

It's a refit of it - We didn't really have a role for the traditional MAKO as it's so undergunned and said to perform badly in every way. Imagine the ship stops about half way without the refit, the bridge being where the large backwards bulk ends, and the front half of the ship is just a large rail gun added.

Description

Based on concepts from Halo: Reach. The Hammerhead is a corvette armed with heavy flak cannons and smaller, missile targetting guns, while the MAKO has been refitted with a very large railgun and acts as a long-range siege ship in the early game.
