What happens when you take all of the dialogue and text of Half-Life, its expansions and sequel, run it through several different languages in Google Translate, then translate it back to English? The result is a wacky, distorted, hilarious version of these games we all love. Welcome to Half-Life: Google Translate Edition!

Before I begin this update, I just want to give a massive thank you for all of the love and support you all have been giving to this wacky project of mine. For the better part of July 7th, this mod was ranked number 1 on ModDB, which is completely insane to me. I've been on this website ever since I was 11 years old, and back then, I would have never dreamed that this would ever happen. Thank you all so much.

As you may have noticed, there have been some new releases for this project. Here are all of them thus far:

Half-Life: GTE V1.1

Half Life: GTE V1.1

Opposing Force: GTE V1.1

Blue Shift: GTE V1.0

Deathmatch Classic: GTE

Ricochet: GTE

About the new releases

Ricochet GTE - If you somehow find a server, you might get a few chuckles. Probably worth playing for a couple minutes if you happen to own the game already. If you don't... well... honestly not worth it.

Deathmatch Classic: GTE - Same as Ricochet, though there's slightly more content.

Decay: GTE - I went into a lot more detail on the file description, but I'll summarize here: this is a mostly finished "rough draft" package, but it is mostly untested. This is not due to laziness on my part; there seems to be certain bugs with the original PC port that prevent some of the event triggers to not load, preventing me from progressing the game. Attempting to use console commands to bypass this simply crashes my game. I assume that this is a problem with the port itself, since this happens both on my old computer and my new computer. Since the author of the port has not been active on the site in well over a decade, and this game plus its bugs are not well documented at all, I can't really do anything to further test it beyond the second level. I wouldn't typically upload something without testing it, but I decided to anyways just in case it happens to work for someone else, or someone can find a fix. Like I said earlier, more details in the file description.

Since the mod has increased in popularity, I've been receiving many different questions, so I decided to put together a FAQ to address most of them. I'm happy to answer any that you do not find on here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be Half-Life 2: GTE?

Yes! Currently, its development is being headed by my friend Gyarik. You can find it here: Moddb.com

Nothing appears translated. Did I install correctly?

A common mistake people make is that they try to install like most other Half-Life Mods, that is, putting the entire mod folder into common/Half-Life. You're supposed to first make a backup of the original game file, then allow this mod's files to overwrite the old ones. For Half-Life GTE, there are some commentors who have mentioned additional ways of installing that don't involve replacing the original files, though I'm not sure any methods exist for the other releases.

How did you translate this? What language(s) did you use?

For each line of text/dialogue, I put it through a varying amount of languages until I got something funny or interesting. The languages I most commonly use are: Latin, Hawaiian, Maori, Xhosa, Kinyarwanda, Gujarati, and Arabic.

How did "Gordon" become "Cicero?"

The Latin language usually causes "Gordon" to translate to "Cicero." Interestingly enough, the same thing often happens to "Freeman" as well (If you put "I hope Gordon can help" and "I hope Freeman can help" through Latin then back to English, they both give the name Cicero).

Why do voice acting instead of Text To Speech?

Because it's more fun, and most people seem to like it more.

Are the weapon view models mixed up because they also got translated?

No, that was just a random quirk I decided to throw in to keep things interesting when there wasn't any dialogue, but most people didn't seem to like it that much, so in Decay GTE as well as any other future releases, I will keep the weapon models the same.

For the last part of the update, I would like to get your guys' opinions on stuff. Lately, I've been thinking about the scope of GoldSrc: GTE, and how much work it'd take to translate every single game on the engine. I also realized that most people don't really seem to care about any other games on the engine aside from Half-Life and its expansions, which is completely fine. At the same time, however, if nobody really wants to see other games get the Google Translate treatment, I really do have better things to do in my life, especially once college starts back up next month. So here is the question I will pose to all of you:

What remaining GoldSrc games do you really want to see get the Google Translate Treatment, if any?

When I am referring to "GoldSrc games," I only mean official games published by Valve themselves, so I won't be doing any mods. Right now, the games I haven't done yet are: Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero + Deleted Scenes, Team Fortress Classic, Day of Defeat, and Gunman Chronicles. If there is a game or two on here that people really want to see get mistranslated, then I will see what I can do in terms of devoting time to it. Additionally, I have enabled user-uploaded downloads on this mod page, so if anyone out there wants to Google Translate one of the games listed above or a mod, they have my permission (I'll post a tutorial at some point in the future as well).

That's all for this time. Sorry the updates have been slow, but know that I am incredibly grateful for all of the support and nice comments I have gotten for this project. Take care, everyone.

Totally forgot I was gonna do that, actually! I might try to get started on that sometime between now and Christmas break, but for now, if you ever have any questions about the process, feel free to message me. Thanks for the reminder!
