Hello everyone,
I cannot believe it has been over two years since I released this. It has gone by so quickly. Furthermore, who could have foreseen the challenges and hardship this year would bring us all. I sincerely hope you are all managing okay. At the very least, things appear to be slowly improving on the whole and hopefully we are going to start seeing a brighter time ahead of us.
I still get feedback and praise about Echoes on almost a daily basis and I just wanted to make a post to thank you all for that. You all have helped lift my spirits during tough times!
Also, who could have ever imagined a new Half-Life title finally being released after so long!!! It is absolutely incredible by the way, for those of you lucky enough to have experienced it. Valve are back, and I missed them.
I have just released the source code and map files for version 1.4 as a few people had requested it - I hope you find it useful in some way.
Lastly, people have asked if I will do more modding in the future. I do have a lot of great ideas milling around, and hope to one day realise them, but being a parent takes a lot out of you! It is wonderful and exhausting, haha. I cannot wait to get my son into Half-Life but it may be some time yet...
Lastly, if you enjoyed my work and ever want to throw a little beer money my way, you can do so here:
Take care everyone, stay safe and look out for each other.
Cheers, James
A final gift to all those who enjoyed my mod - the source map files have been released.
A massive thank you to everyone who played and enjoyed my mod.
After 20 years of enjoying everything that the Half-Life community has had to offer, I am incredibly happy to finally release my own contribution to you...
Playtesting is complete. A release is imminent. Come check out the trailer!

Did you guys actually put Mr. ******* Friendly in this game.
Many mods did back in the day and just like those, it's not a real enemy and instead a combination of mapping tricks.
It is very cool
When the game starts up and every time it loads a new area, it begins playing a music track with acoustic guitar and male vocals that drowns out all other in game sound. This is extremely distracting to say the least, and I can't shut it off via in-game audio, nor can I find it in the game files to delete. I'm assuming this is a bug, has anyone else encountered this? How do I get rid of it?
If you are running steam, right click half life echoes in your library. Go to browse local files, right their. You may have a script from another mod running. right click again go to properties then verify files.
You have a CD in your disk drive!
Maybe try stopsound in the game console. You will have to type it whenever you load or restart the game but it should work.
Great mod
I'm low key interested by the timeline of this mod because the tone is very 'second day of the BMI', including the airstrikes near the end and the presence of the Black Ops (Who didn't arrive in HL1 until after the rocket launch on the first night), but the arrival of the military scene on the bridges implies its in the first day, as does the fact the military haven't pulled out by the final couple of missions which would be after Forget About Freeman if it was in the second day.
Also the nuke is at night whereas it was during the day in Opposing Force.
But idk maybe I'm overthinking it, mod is a 10/10 for me regardless. Phenomenal mod in both atmosphere and gameplay.
It really seems like the mod plays to how we remember Half-Life rather than the specifics of it, as Gordon's Worst Day on the Job; ultimately I think it's better for it with the tone it creates and how it completely recreates Black Mesa in a way that feels very right to the spirit of the place, but is architecturally entirely different. The nighttime nuke scene is so haunting.
I think it really fits if you put it with how the mod is framed in the menus, as an interview performance for G-Man. G-Man does not care about the protag to the point that he did not even record their name and you do not learn anything about your protagonist as a person, and with his space and time warping he may not even care what time it actually was beyond the start as a formality. To him this is just another day on the job, so it starts at day and goes to night when his job is done, and you were done.
Yeah that is very true. And the nighttime nuke is very haunting.
I have my own headcanons that resolve most of the contradictions anyway, I just figured it was worth asking to see if it was thought through. Not that it's bad even if it isn't, Echoes is a phenomenal mod regardless.
