Firmly sticking to the Half Life 2 formula, Deep Down is a new entry in the story of Alyx and Gordon as they continue the hunt for Combine Advisors in the area surrounding White Forest.

Combine Forces, Zombies and Antlions lay between them and the brooding menace deep below the earth that will test both their skills further than ever before.

If you miss the Half Life 2 formula and are tired of waiting patiently for Episode 3 then this mod is for you. Featuring new gameplay elements, fiendish puzzles and blistering action, Deep Down will provide your Half Life 2 fix (well some of it at least).

Finally made it over the finish line after a drama filled few weeks of technical issues with Source SDK. Deep Down is my attempt to recreate the game-play and style of Episode 2. I had no idea it would be so challenging. I must have lost days of my life trawling through audio files trying to find just the right phrase for each moment. Someone should seriously catalog this stuff.

In this mod you'll find 5 maps filled with combat and puzzles and hopefully some things you haven't seen before. I'm calling this version 1.0 as I'm sure there's room for improvement.

I was able to accidentally play the maps backwards two times, first at the crane part by climbing up to it with a barrel and a car, then after the "fan blowing" part by falling into the water. This made those parts really confusing. Climbing on the iron ledge of the container was also impossible to find.

Other than these, I liked this mod a lot, glad you included Alyx as well.

This is possibly one of the greatest HL2 mods I've ever played.

It looks great - the environments both indoor and outdoor are top notch. The pacing and gameplay are perfect, not once did I feel bored and the combat is challenging but not too challenging.

My only criticisms are very minor - one of them echoes what another user said (canonically, why would there be Magnusson devices hidden in the mineshaft? It would probably have been better just to put a rocket crate there for every strider battle). Also some of the physics puzzles went a bit wrong and I had to brute-force my way through with the gravity gun and by repeatedly ramming the car into things. And lastly the ending felt a little bit rushed - the screen just faded to black and left me wondering what was going on.

But none of these take away from what is simply a fantastic mod. I'd say it was a must-play.

"Deep Down" is one of the most aggravating HL2 user-made mods I have ever 'attempted' to play.

You begin this mod accompanied by the very annoying ****, Alex...who tells you "its' time to go." Not long afterwards, one of your comrades -who is peering at you through a window- orders you to get into the car...and begins screaming at you if you don't do it IMMEDIATELY.

Right off that bat, the door that the car is supposed to EXIT through (in the garage) is closed. Since "DOG" is standing behind me...I initially assumed that this was a 'script error' -- I assumed that "DOG" was supposed to break down the door.....or else the door was supposed to open automatically on its own.

Hence, within just a couple of minutes, I was forced to resort to a youtube video walkthrough of this mod....and realized that although I was ordered to immediately get into the car and go...I actually INSTEAD am supposed to explore the outside of the garage...climb a ladder.....and then and ONLY THEN....switch a lever which happens to open the garage door. I might have figured this out and began 'exploring' outside the garage...but the fact that Alex and the stupid 'douche-bag' insisted that I get into the car 'IMMEDIATELY' gave me the impression that a 'script error' was at fault, instead.

Very soon afterwards -- as the annoying half-breed negro-**** Alex and I begin making our way in the car for awhile...whenever I get out of the car to 'explore' areas here and there outdoors on foot -- she constantly began getting 'stuck' in these areas...while she was also on foot. Hence, I found it necessary to save games very often and to load saved games and to stop 'exploring' outside areas due to the fact she was constantly getting 'stuck' in specific 'non-obstacles' such as the other side of a log or on top of a big boulder, etc.

After resorting to the aforementioned youtube video walkthrough AGAIN to figure out how to get the car to yet another area...I soon afterwards entered an area of the map -which was the inside a building complex- that was dimly-lit and full of mines and combine 'bulls' and turrets. The mines were nearly impossible to see -until reaching their proximity- which resulted in 'instant death' several times.

All throughout this area of the map, Alex 'stepped aside' and refused to assist in the combat. It was very perplexing and annoying that she WAS WILLING to kill combine soldiers up until this point, but not during this area of the map.

Finally, once I figured out how to use the crane to lift the car from the grass onto the parking lot....there was an area of the chain gate that was SUPPOSED TO BE OPEN but it remained CLOSED instead. It must've been yet another 'script error,' because in the youtube video walkthrough, this area of the gate was OPEN once the car was dropped, via the crane, onto the parking lot. Hence, I very meticulously walked through the entire building complex ALL OVER AGAIN to see if I missed ANYTHING such as a lever or button or ANYTHING that SHOULD'VE opened the gate -to no avail.

Since I was unable to find out to open the gate (my assumption is still that it was supposed to open AUTOMATICALLY) I was absolutely unable to progress any further in this very, very annoying mod. I did have the very latest version (Steam version) of "Deep Down" installed.

I rate "Deep Down" a 2/10.

I love the mapping in this but worldbuilding wise there's a few things I don't get. What was the original purpose of those huge mine shafts that the Striders navigate in the final battle? And why are there Magnussen devices hidden in the tunnels? And why does killing the Advisor stop the Combine's attack of the base? And why does it kidnap Alyx?
