Night darkening is not handled by simply reducing sun and sky color amounts. Nope, there's an "inscatter" amount which controls horizon haze color / amount. You have to cut that to darken everything. But, you have to keep certain things bright, like lightning. On a pitch-black evening, a bolt of lightning arcs down ominously.
