First Strike is a Star Wars total conversion modification for Battlefield 2142. The goal of First Strike is to totally immerse the players into the amazing universe of Star Wars by presenting the most accurate representations of famous Star Wars locales, weapons, and characters, and combining them with exciting, fast paced gameplay and features new to the Battlefield scene. Within this mod you'll find yourself as a soldier of the Galactic Empire or as a freedom fighter for the Rebel Alliance. You'll fight across lovingly detailed recreations of various Star Wars locations with a wide array of weapons and vehicles.

GREETINGS TROOPERS!

This is just a quick update to address a few issues that have been thrown up by recent events. First up as the title of this post states, we must say goodbye to GameSpy at the end of May. This will have an effect on many games with a multiplayer component as a lot of them used the GameSpy facility to gain access to servers. This unfortunately includes our base game BF2142. Exactly what this means for us as a mod for that game is still unclear. Sure First Strike has a strong singleplayer component, but it is intended primarily as a multiplayer game. So we'll have to look into the ramifications of what effect this has on us, and whether there is a way to circumvent the need for the GameSpy server facility and keep our ability to be a server based multiplayer game.

In addition to this our forum server provider just closed down resulting in our forum being down for a few days. Some people I think have panicked (due to the timing) thinking that just with the news of GameSpy going down that the mod instantly died from the shock or something. Rest assured this is not the case. Our forums are now back up hosted from another location.

Though to be fair this fear is understandable to some extent, as things have been quite quiet at First Strike towers for the last few weeks. After the flurry of intense development time getting FS 1.6 out the door we have had a few issues which have hampered development lately, seems if it is not one thing it is something else. However we are still working on it and will soon be getting updates out to you which will tweak the latest map released from the mod for balance, and soon release the additional map which was promised as a 1.6 release map. Below are a few shots of some of the last assets being developed for this map to add just a little more polish and familiar authenticity to the new environments that you'll get to battle in.

Something which hasn't helped though is the relatively low numbers of players about lately. If you want to see more, come out on-line and support us and get on the server and have a few games. Nothing encourages us to continue work like seeing a good full First Strike server, but s imilarly nothing is less encouraging than seeing empty servers not long after a new release. Head on to the Rebel Defiance server on Sundays at 8pm BST (British Summer Time) for your best chance to catch people in game.

As for future releases of content for First Strike, these are uncertain times, it will all depend on the level of support the mod recieves, and of course what the closure of GameSpy means for us as a multiplayer mod. Hopefully we'll hear something positive on that front. Lets just get all the games in that we can until we find out.

Until then...

See you on the Battlefield Troopers!

I noticed the multiplayer seemed dead. Do we connect right through the game itself?

Yeah, you just need to make sure you check same mod and same version in the server browser settings. And yes, unfortunately the multiplayer does seem a little dead at the moment (perhaps we just made the Singleplayer too good?), we have a few things in need of attention first, and then we'll look to address this by getting a campaign event going, these tend to do a good job of drawing people out to play regularly.
