Greetings Troopers! Just in case you were all getting a bit sick of us telling you about all the cool stuff that is going into the Battle of Hoth map, and what an awesome experience it is going to be when we finally get it out of the door. We thought you might like to hear about some of the additional projects we're working on in conjunction with our development of Hoth. So here is the first in a short series of production updates illustrating what else other than Hoth we have planned this year.

First up, we have the development of another blaster for you all to take great pleasure in fragging your opponents with. The EE-3 Blaster Carbine is an impressive weapon made infamous by the notorious Bounty Hunter Boba Fett. Within First Strike we haven't quite decided what role it will play, though it is more than likely that it will replace one of the weapons used by the Rebel faction, and that the weapon it replaces will become an additional pick up kit, similar in nature to the Bounty Hunter kit currently available on the singleplayer and co-op versions of Mos Espa. It will come equipped with a similar play style to the Imperial's MG-15 blaster which should make it a fun and formidable weapon to use.

Below are a few WIP (Work In Progress) images for you to enjoy.

Keep your sensors peeled for future articles in this series to come.

See you out there Troopers!

I doubt they had blasters that well-crafted in the original production :)

Is that the highpoly model or is it baked? The detail is crisp and outstanding. I wish I had that modelers brain for baking (if it is baked). Any chance of wireframes or a link to the portfolio? I'm learning ;)

Thanks.

This is at the moment a relatively high poly model, it is yet to be optimised for in game use. I've yet to decide whether I'll drop the level of detail down that much yet, will depend on how the optimisation goes. At the moment all the detail you see there is geometry as the texture maps have yet to be applied.

With the power of PCs nowadays compared with where we were at when BF2142 came out a few years ago, we can throw a lot more polys at assets such as this weapon, so though this would have been considered a little too high poly for BF2142, I may not need to shave that much off of this to make it a viable in game weapon.

I have no other pictures of this weapon, such as wireframes published at the moment, but once I've optimised it I'll post a wireframe version for you.

Cool man, excellent. Looking at how other people model helps me a lot. I'm texturing my first character at the moment and had tons of problems understanding baking, at first. Especially if the detail is not uniformly distributed among a mesh; now it's much better, but I don't alway have enough geometry in the low poly or there is some other problem; the worst thing is when there are a million reasons what a problem could be. But then again 3D is all about failing and asking and trying again.

I could have figured this model be near low enough to be ingame. I think you can bake those pieces on the butt without losing too much detail. I make concepts, maybe you need some in the future. I always wanted to try something Star Wars themed. Is there maybe anything you guys need painted/designed? I've been watching this mod for years and always was too greedy to buy BF2142 (got BF2 as last of the series). Or maybe I just like looking at the great atmosphere in the screenshots. Truly one of the most oustanding mods in regard to giving a great experience on an older engine.
