A mod that recreates Far Cry 2 expirience in the Cry Engine 2

Report RSS Two Levels

The game is going to have two Levels (two maps). First one (canyon, Jungle) second one (Savannah, Serengeti).

Posted by on

Because of the small size the main map has (canyon, Jungle) I've created another map (Savannah, Serengeti). The connecting point between the two maps will be after you are "killed" in the first map then you will be taken by a train to the second map! The whole size of the maps is 6 x 6 km. The firs map is 2 x 2 km (canyon, Jungle) and the second one is 4 x 4 km (Savannah, Serengeti).

What do you mean, they're not braking any copyrights.

Reproducing an existing game is breaking a copyright.

When it's about recreating an old game it's usually not a problem but Far Cry 2 is just out.
So I was just warning the author(s) of the mod, I don't know what's Ubisoft policy about such things.

Changing the name or/and the way the mod is presented could avoid being bothered by Ubisoft. If you just say that it's a mod taking place in Africa I don't think they will (or even be able to) bother the creator of the mod.

Aside, the work done so far is great !

They are trying to recreate the "experience" and Ubisoft wouldn't bother a mod. Microsoft just felt that Halogen was a threat to their upcoming RTS, whereas FC2 is already out, and made huge money.

They arn`t copying far-cry as it`s names different. They only use same kinda settings and features but not copying :p. Seen this in crymod.com looks incredible love the dynamic fire can`t wait for release :D.

ooooooh deeeer, this is not copyright infringement. If it was the same name, same story, same characters, exactly the same or a tiny bit different location, then yes, it would break the copyright, but the only similarities are that it has far in it's name, and crysis rather than cry, as well as the africa setting, which is absolutely fine otherwise you could argue that any game set in the pacific is a copyright of crysis, or any zombie game/mod could be argued to be a copyright of any zombie related game or movie, since generally the story is "virus breaks out, everyone turns into zombies" ...it's fairly generic, just as WW2 shooters are.

Of course, ubisoft ARE able to try and close the project down (they don't have rights to though) and they CAN try and sue the project developers if it isn't shut down, but ubisoft ARE NOT that stupid (as they would fail), and it really isn't necessary.

Good luck!

Man people really don't get it. Mods are more or less beyond the realm of copyright for companies that actually matter. It almost makes me angry to think that people think that Valve, Epic, or Ubisoft would sue or shut down a mod because it emulates one of their games. You can definately tell that anyone who thinks so is one of the gamers from the new generation.

Hopefully people learn eventually. Although, Ubisoft is more like EA than any other company. They can be stupid, as proven with the Farcry 2 lack of SDK.

NullSoldier - That post had everything. Intellectual property and copyright are serious business (legal and ethical), and I respect people for giving warnings about infringing on the intellectual property of others even if they are unlikely to be pursued in the courts.

Intellectual property should not, ethically, be something that people think about in terms of getting away with it. If you feel you have to emulate something, make it clear why you're emulating it. If the reason is sound then the copy can be seen as an homage. If the reason is not sound, it is just a lame, unimaginative rip-off.

"You can definately tell that anyone who thinks so is one of the gamers from the new generation."

Huh? Isn't this a little prejudiced? You're only 23 (according to your profile). Shouldn't people's opinions and such be accorded support based on their merit, not on the age of the opinion holder?

"Hopefully people learn eventually. Although, Ubisoft is more like EA than any other company. They can be stupid, as proven with the Farcry 2 lack of SDK."

I like that a company is considered stupid for trying to protect its intellectual property.

Just to clarify my position, I don't think this mod is in breach of copyright, but the author/s should still be prepared to face a cease and dessist - not because they are likely to get one, but just because they are operating inside another company's sphere.

It looks like you simply did not understand my post. Perhaps I didn't express my statement clearly.

I EASILY disagree with what you have posted, especially that it seems you automatically assume that a company automatically takes a pessimistic view on shutting mods down. If you read my post correctly, I said, "Mods are more or less beyond the realm of copyright for companies that actually matter." You clearly did not, "companies that matter", being the company that are at the top of the list of game developers such as Valve, Epic, etc.. simply because they realize how much mods benefit their game rather than take them away. Why shut something down when it promotes a game more than it takes away? Even if it looks like another game, or level. You just don't realize that some development companies are actually smart and have come to accept modding as a legal method of game development even if it looks like something else, because once you provide someone with sandbox tools you've just opened anyone and everyone to creating anything no matter where in the world they are.

You don't seem to understand what "Generation of gamer" seems to mean. Modding was something that was generally accepted and well known by all older generations of gamers in the quake, and doom times because the gamers in those times actually cared. Having been in communities and gone to LAN parties with newer and older generations of gamers, you can EASILY see the difference between them.

May I ask why you think not releasing an SDK is protecting its intellectual property? Choosing to not release the SDK because they wanted to protect their intellectual property was probably the LAST reason why they didn't. I guess if releasing your SDK is giving your intellectual property to the community than Valve just might as well make their engine open source. Thank god reputable companies such as Valve disagree with your point of view or we'd all basically be in the same boat as Console gamers when it comes to mods.

There is some sort of communication problem, I agree. Did you think I was suggesting that modifying a game was a breach of copyright? Far from it. I was saying that making a modification based on existing intellecual property was a breach of copyright.

If I make a mod (the engine is irrelevant) based on Star Wars, don't you think it is the right of Lucasfilm to shut me down? The same applies here: Ubisoft makes Far Cry 2, someone makes a mod replicating parts of Far Cry 2 for Crysis. Ubisoft, as owners of the IP have every right to shut the mod down. Will they? Probably not, but that isn't the point.

So we should disregard their opinions because they weren't around when Quake and Doom were going strong? Don't tell me that older people (you're only three years older than me by the way) know better about modding because they cared, talk to me about specific individuals not caring, not about whole age groups - you will always find exceptions.

Screenies are looking good, but I still wonder why you're sticking so close to the Farcry 2 name and game. Why not just keep the same environment but make your own (new) game for it?

You misinterpret me. I wasn't saying that keeping the SDK to themselves was a bid to protect their IP (but it might have been). You seemed to imply that Ubisoft is unlikely to sue (which you would consider stupid) in spite of their previous stupdity (not releasing the SDK). If I misunderstood, I apologise, and perhaps you can clarify your view on companies protecting their intellectual property i.e. whether you think they have a right to do it or not.

Thank god reputable companies such as Valve disagree with your point of view or we'd all basically be in the same boat as Console gamers when it comes to mods.

Does Valve disagree with me? I thought they would be extremely eager to protect their flag-ship franchises from copyright infringements.

I expect this has all been a misunderstanding, so I will try to make myself clear one more time:

I am simply giving the author/s of this mod a heads-up - you might recieve a letter from Ubisoft's legal department. I am a great supporter of modding and of the originality modding brings to games. I am also a huge supporter of companies (like Valve and Crytek) that provide modding tools and support to the public.

I am opposed to breaches of copyright and I support the efforts of companies, large and small, to bring an end to infringements on intellectual property.

PS - The mod author/s might consider changing the font used in the mod banner :D

PPS - I won't be continuing my argument here, it's hijacking this page :( I apologise

The wohle size is not 6 x 6 km hehe ...
A1 = 6km x 6km = 36km²

A2 = 2km x 2km = 4km²
A3 = 4km x 4km = 16km²

A2 + A3 <> A1

A2 + A3 = A4 = 20km²

sqrt(20km²) = 4,72...km²

Whole Map = 4,72...km x 4,72...km

:D

Well I am new to mods and have no idea how to build one yet but my .02 would be scrap the farcry idea and go with a "tears of the sun" theme. It is set in Africa during a genocide and you can shoot people and get a group of people from one point to another. It would be cool to really have the environment play a major role in the story plus you wouldn't have to worry about the complete opens that farcry 2 has.

I doubt the developer's going to change the entire basis of his mod because a single, anonymous person wants it to be different.

oh my god this is not a copy right....
as long as they dont try to sell this mod then it dose not difilal any copy rights.and if they get sued nothing would happen beause both farcry and crysis DID realese a modding software (anything that has to do with an editor)and if you read the ''READ ME'' on both cryengine 2 and dunia they both say that you own all copy rights and are not permited to sell or trade production that is made in this editor

so there pretty much saying ''yes modd are games'' and helps the gameing industiry by modders out there getting so good that they eather join a game developers or start there own game creation.

SO STOP TRYING TO SAY THAT THIS IS AGINST THE LAW YOU RETARDS!!

:D

Microsoft holds a copyright on Halo, but nobody can hold a copyright on Africa, or the word "Far".

BTW, mod looks awesome! Keep up the good work!
