New Name Same Great Taste

A massive single player role playing game with deep character driven mechanics and branching narrative quest architecture, FNC takes you on a journey through the aftermath of the NCR-Enclave War following the end of Fallout 2 twenty years before, leading into the events that inspire Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

1. Story

Loading Screens for BETA 200

Set in 2260, a crippled Enclave has just one last squadron left behind in California as their remnants journey East on the call of their President. The New California Republic has stagnated economically, their political structure wracked by deep corruption that goes to the highest office, and their economy is all but ruined.

A psychotic Raider Warlord, Juan Elsdragon, has assumed control of a vast Raider Alliance collected of the various tribes washed away by the NCR's pacification efforts, bolstered by hundreds of survivalists who resist the taxes and cultural erasure the NCR represents.

You are born sometime before this to a wasteland tribe. Orphaned and adopted by the Wasteland Scouts from Vault 18 high in the San Bernardino Mountains, you and your fellow tribal kin have been raised to be the new generation to explore the wastes beyond the great door. Unfortunately, the legendary Wasteland Scouts before you made powerful enemies, and their Vault remains locked away, hidden in their seclusion.

2. Getting Started

Loading Screens for BETA 200

This is a mod for the PC vesrion of Fallout: New Vegas.

All you need to get started is:

  1. Fallout: New Vegas
    1. If you downloaded your copy on Steam or Humble or DVD, get the 4GB Patch! <-VITAL!!
    2. If you got your copy on GOG.com, you're good to go. They patched their version, they're heroes.
    3. You do not need the Ultimate Edition or DLC. Just New Vegas by itself. But the DLC is amazing, you should buy it and play it anyway when you finish FNC.
  2. A Mod Manager of Your Choice!
    1. Nexus Vortex (Beta) (<- It's new but extreamly reliable and easy to use!)
    2. Mod Organizer 2 (Fallout 4 page, but works on New Vegas very reliably.)
    3. Fallout mod manager and Nexus Mod Manager are broken all to hell. DON'T use them!
    4. Switch to Nexus or MO2 unless you are an advanced user!
  3. And that's it. You're ready! We have OPTIONAL recommended mods. Very few incompatibilities.

3.Installation

5. FAQs

November 2017 UPDATE -- Part 1

I. How do I install this mod?

There is a helpful guide above, it's just a quick set up process.

You need a mod manger of your choice and the 4GB Patch. Once those are installed, you're good to go. Just load FNC and follow the instructions.

Can I install it manually?

Yes, the same as any other mod. Just unzip and drag&drop the contents into your DATA folder.

Is there an Installer?

After you run your mod manager, it's as easy as an installer. Just select the file in your Package Manager and it will automatically install.

II. Does this mod require any other mods, DLCs, etc?

No. We do have a short Recommended Mods List if you want your game to look like our screenshots and videos, but those are optional.

III. How do I start New California?

Don't forget that New California is started from the New Game Menu!!
Your New Vegas save games will be totally unaffected.

IV. So, this is like what, a DLC?

More like a new campaign. New California runs in the New Vegas engine but it is not set in New Vegas (it's set in New California at a place called The Pass.) At the end we allow you to continue as the Courier (or not). We have a new worldspace not connected to the Mojave and our own independent story made from scratch. All new textures, meshes, basically a separate game.

How long is it?

How many hours? Depending on your choices and play-style, anywhere from 6-8 hours to 15-30 hours if you're a completionist, and because of there are so many branches and hidden opportunities it's extremely replayable. There are 13 endings total, many of which are radically different stories start to finish.

How big is the map?

Very large. About 2/3rds of New Vegas.

Is there voice acting?

There are 16,942 lines of dialogue. 14,877 of which are voiced by characters and non-repeating from 60 volunteer voice actors.

How many quests are there?

48. And that may be a lie, there are a lot more that simply aren't distinct because they emerge as you play. We try to document them all here.

V. Will this break my existing save game or all my mods?

No. We have A List of Incompatible Mods and it is very short. Your New Vegas save will be fine and totally unaffected. It requires starting a new game.

VI. I can't seem to get New California to start. Help?

A -- I installed everything correctly and New Vegas crashes on startup!

You sure? Check your load order.
Run like this:

FalloutNV.esm
NewCalifornia.esm

See if it runs now.
If not, you may have something else wrong with your installation of New Vegas. Check our discord Help channel.

B -- I installed everything correctly and clicked New Game and nothing happens!

Are you running on Steam?
Yes.
Check your Language Settings and make sure you're running US English.
Didn't work!
Make sure NewCalifornia.esm is in fact checked in your load order underneath FalloutNV.esm, above all other plugins, below the DLC.
It is!
Turn Archive Invalidation On and Off and On again in FOMM.
Still nothing!
Report to Discord #Help or post in the Nexus Forum.

I am using MO2, Vortex, FOMM, or NMM.
That should work on all of them... if you followed our instructions.
Report to Discord #Help or post in the Nexus Forum.

C -- I installed everything correctly and clicked New Game, saw the video, Tackle or Dodge, and Crashed entering the Atrium!

You need the 4GB Patch if you are running Steam. The GOG.com version comes pre-patched so you shouldn't crash at all.
I installed that and it still crashed!
Install it correctly.
Oh hey, it works, thanks!
No Problem.
It did not work...
Report to the #Help channel on Discord or the Forums on Nexus.

VII. The Atrium runs at a really low FPS... So does Union City and Athens-Tec.

Yep. We know. It sucks. We'll patch it ASAP.
#1 -- Don't look directly into the middle of the map from the Gym Hallway and it'll go away. Just get past it.
#2 -- ENB does this sometimes. Rudy ENB is better. If your PC runs New Vegas at 60fps, it'll run this okay.
#3 -- If your PC is struggling with the High Resolution Pack, step back down to the Low Res Pack.

VIII. Can I get to California from the Mojave?

No.

What if I use console commands?

Everything will break.

Can someone mod that in? I don't want to start a New Game.

FNC is almost a totally separate game, so its like asking to port your save from Mass Effect to Fallout 3.

IX. Can I get to the Mojave from California and continue my game after the ending?

Yes! At the end of our BETA 200 Testing, anyway!

For now we are in testing phase. As soon as our mod is fully tested we will turn that feature on at 1.0. We don't want you to break your New Vegas save game while we're still launching weekly and monthly updates that require restarts to take effect.

X. Is this compatible with....

Project Nevada?
Yes! I recommend it!

Solid Project?
Yes! I also recommend it!

ENBs?
Yes! Rudy ENB is what's in all our screenshots.
Keep in mind that our Fade to Black transitions don't work with ENBs, so that'll look awkward.

TTW?
Not yet. They're making a patch but it may take a long time. It's unreasonably complicated for both of our teams.

The Frontier?
Yes. You can play FNC -> FNV -> FTF in one big long save game. (The more mods you have the higher the probability of corruption.)

My Menu Replacer (DARN UI, etc)?
If you want Revelation HUD, apply this mod here!
If you delete New California -- Menus.bsa in your DATA folder, our menus from SGhi.info vanish and you're good to go.
This is also true if you just don't like our menus replacer and want to go vanilla.

This Random Body Mod?
We use Vanilla body types. If you want Big Bouncing Lizard Tits and Centaur Vaginas, that is entirely up to you my friend.

All my 5,000 Weapon Mods?
Yes. Though they may not show up in our worldspace.

All my Combat and AI mods?
Yep. Should be just fine. Report them if they cause problems.

My custom Pip-boy 7 Billion?
Yup.

Role Players Alternate Start?
NO. :p

We have a short Recommended Mods List.

And...

We have A List of Incompatible Mods.

You might want to check those or report bugs to our #public-bug-reports channel on Discord. Or in the Nexus thread.

XI. Why the name change?

Project Brazil was a working title. New California is what our mod is about.

Did you know there is a board ga--

Yes. It is very cool. You should go buy it. Tell them the sale is from Thain, with love.

XII. Why did you make this game sized mod?

We wanted to learn how to make our own games. What better way is there than to make a game sized mod first?

XIII. Is this on consol?

No.

XIV. Is this coming to Fallout 4?

No.

How hard could it be to port--

VERY. VERY HARD. It would take many years.

But Fallout 4 New Vegas did--

VERY. VERY HARD. You should try it. Good luck!

November 2017 UPDATE -- Part 1

And don't forget that we also have a company!

New California was just a fun educational / personal project that got out of hand! :p We also have day jobs: also a career making visual effects and camera operation for games and movies.

We have a new game on the horizon too!

Updates for August

It'll be a top down 3D-Isometric Survival RPG set on the ruins of an alien megastructure. You start our freshly abducted from Earth with people from across time and space. You'll have to gather a tribe of fellow survivors and brave the harsh wilderness to face medieval empires and alien organisms as you build a town and send player controlled parties out on quests. A little bit Fallout 1 and 2, a little bit Civilization, a little bit Rimworld (Tynan is a hero and just released 1.0, GO GET IT ITS SO GOOD), all on Unreal Engine.

I could use a couple 2D artists on the new team right now, and you can donate to our Pay-Pal to help me afford the start up expenses. We have a bunch of veterans we've worked with before that want in on this, so I need to begin crowd funding after FNC is all wrapped up so we can afford to focus just on this project.

And as always...

You can read more about our progress on the Design Documents Found Here. In the mean time, you can keep track of us on ModDB, Fallout Nexus, Facebook, and our Discord. We've got a thriving online community centered around each one.

Cheers

Brandan Lee
Project Lead

This mod is awesome! I've really enjoyed it so far. The only real issue I've run into is the sound getting out of sync sometimes during combat with multiple NPCs. Is this a FNV issue or likely something to do with my soundcard?

Win10 seems to try to reset your stereo to 7.1 regardless of whether or not you actually have 7.1. So that can cause issues til you re-set it!

I'm on Windows 7 but I'll check my sound cards settings just in case. I have noticed that the lagging sound does coincide with a frame rate drop usually when there are a large number of enemy NPCs on the screen.

Okay, checked my sound card it's on stereo. I've increase my sample rate to 192 KHz, disabled anti-aliasing and a few other affects which has helped to reduce the issue.

I completed every quest I came across inside the vault before I ended up leaving. I escaped to the lodge with all my companions still alive; Jenn, Eric, Jamie, Johnny and, Kurtz. However, when the raiders showed up the next day, everyone but Kurtz just vanished. There were nowhere to be seen. I killed the raiders that tried to bag me with the frag mines and a hunting shotgun. I spent nearly 40 minutes trying to find them before I headed out to the Union where I then got dragged into the NCR's war and became their dog. I still want to find out what the hell happened to my companions. I even did the extra quest to save Johnny.

Mod is great so far! The robotics lab in Vault 18 is extremely laggy though, under 1 FPS!

Holy Brahmin, finished now 4 endings. Awesome, cant belive "people" can release a "mod" that huge and with so epic storyline. Voice acting was perfect too. Awesome job guys resurrected NV after 8 years after release. One Q... how lore friendly was your story to Fallout series? Just curious. PS crashes like every 40 mins but who care, it isnt somethink i dont know from original NV anyway.

We're extremely lore friendly. Arguments can and have been made about little nitpicky details b that's nothing I or any sane human being should ever care about. :p

Try 203 tomorrow! A little bit more content was added and tons and tons and tons of bug fixes.

Had a good time playing this one. Thank you so much for putting it out. This was a learning experience that's for sure. Do not try to kill people before the quest, because they don't die. I tried killing one and had to run across California with my gun blazing all the way to the Rangers. I was killing people that I had to go back to kill later. going to try going through again and explore more and not go with quest so fast. one tip for people...if you see enemy on your radar and can't see them, it is a tiny spider on the road in darkness. I was looking all over lol I thought this would roll into Vegas but it didn't. I was ready to go in to Vegas with some experience and weapons. I give a thumbs up for what you put out.
If you crash a lot, clean out the saves. you get a lot of them building up.
