Just a matter of choice, and more choice is a good thing :)
some are used to downloading mods from moddb, and its easier to spot it in your tracking list then on steam among the ****** indie games
They really ought to redesign the greenlight and indie game hubs to be more end-user friendly.
Alternative downloads are essential for those who play HL2 without steam on a low end pc. I know it's unethical but steam is so resource demanding that it'd be impossible to run the game smoothly. I managed to get a very decent performance on an old Asus Ebox (mini PC) 1.6 dual atom CPU with 2gb ram thanks to steamless setup.

This looks pretty good.
I will be downloading this off of Steam, because Moddb's mirrors are garbage and take years to download. =p
But just from that one screenshot, I am immediately interested and will be tracking.
