The elkriders are not lore-wise but they are an idea very common in lotr games.
And if you look into the current version, you will see that we had elkriders long before Peter Jackson ;)

Honestly does it really matter if Tolkien expressly wrote in his works that elves rode elk? How do we know that if he was alive today he wouldn't like the idea? We don't too many people get caught up in whether it's "lore-friendly" instead of just looking at it like, "that's a creative way to add cavalry to the faction (and therefore balance) without taking away the style of faction". I like the idea, and I think it'd be a cool support unit to bolster the main units of Mirkwood.
