Dark Interval is a restoration/revision mod that lets you play Half-Life 2 as it could have been. Using Valve's early concepts, we're creating new maps, models, textures, and custom dialogue. The mod is released in episodes, the most recent being Dark Interval: Part I - an intro chapter to the bigger story.
The Floater is a passive creature encountered among the Xenian overgrowth.
This design is a direct remake of the cut Half-Life creature.

Now, about the state of Dark Interval.
2020 was pretty eventful in HL1&2 modding. We saw the release of G String, tasty updates from Entropy Zero 2, Thunder Leaves, Raising the Bar, Build 2001 - just to name a few - and we also saw the cancellation of Absolute Zero...
Dark Interval is doing really well, all things considered. We, the core team, were largely unaffected by anything medical or political. We saw more help than before with people playtesting, composing music, providing assistance.
It still takes time, as always.
Here's a bullet-point list of some key things.
- Can Part 2 still release in 2020? NO. We can't realistically aim at a 2020 release.
- Milestone reached: by now, all *16* of Part 2 maps are connected in a single chain that you can go through without console inputs or cheats.
- We've made available a playable partial build of Part 2, containing the first 4 maps. We had a great deal of feedback and bug reports, which means there's a great deal to work on, fix things. The build is available on our Discord. Discord.gg
- Our content updates have been pretty dry. Why?
We've already showed the basic versions of most things in the mod, save for what we didn't want to spoil.
While we keep updating the maps and all, it often doesn't look different enough, and the spoiler-y bits are still spoiler-y.
The system updates (code, scripting, etc) aren't very "showable" in a picture or video.
All in all, we don't want to scrape for more content to show among what was ALREADY showed, so for now, this'll have to suffice.
In conclusion, nothing bad has happened to the project, the silence on the Moddb front is due to us being pretty busy.
Oh, and again, you can see the Floater in 3d on Sketchfab. Skfb.ly
looks great! great work
Wow, that looks amazing! Great job DI Dev team!
Great to hear from ya! Love the design, it's really fleshy and disgusting, just as Xen aliens should be :D I can't wait to see how this one behaves and how it compliments the combat sandbox you brought to Half-Life 2 with new creatures ;)
I wouldn't really say disgusting.
EDIT: Why did this get downvoted?
maybe nasty? I meant it as a positive, it's because of how wrinkly it is, looks like real skin on something that doesn't look like it should have real skin, if that makes sense
To me it doesn't look like something that wouldn't have some form of skin. I think you mean it looks natural...?
This is a deleted creature from Half-Life 1. The more disgusting they make it, the more we like it. That's what we want.
Your opinion, not the opinions of everyone else. It looks great to me, and I don't think it looks disgusting.
This creature grows weird in Half-Life 1, so I think it's best to restore its weirdness. I don't think the current work is bad, but I understand what you mean.
True. The concept of it (basically a living balloon of an animal floating through air) alone is pretty strange.
ooo Half-Life 1 Beta enemy! he looks just as cute and cuddly as ever!
NICE! I like that you are including several passive alien species into the mostly-hostile Xenian environments. Will the boids be getting a new model? I hope both variants stay in Dark Interval.
Awesome !
The floater it looks cool in the remake. better than the original. You did a good job. mod look fantastic! Good luck and success in continuing the mod you are developing!
Great!
Damn. This looks great!
I think it should be slimmer with a more detailed body and a more colorful skin.
Can't wait to see it in action, excellent work.
You can in the demo available on the Dark Interval Discord. :)
nice
Amazing !
Hey A-Shift. I have a question: Is Dark Interval part 2 releasing this year since you couldn't release it last year?
Ah, the floating, poison-gas bag that was cut. IIRC the wing acts like a rudder to steer it in the direction it wishes to float in. Also there was some mention of having moth-antennae. It should be a little more colorful but it already impressive. Good work guys!
