What would Half-Life 2 have been like if we had gotten the version shown to us in the official promotional materials? Coterminus attempts to answer that question as well as provide a platform for others to make mods based on Half-Life 2 cut content.

Report RSS Coterminus - Major Media Update Part 4 - Gameplay video and release plans

The last part of the major media update. This article will showcase a little gameplay and talk about the first release of Coterminus as well as plans following the first release.

Welcome to Part 4 of the Major Media Update!

If you missed any of the previous articles, you can find them here:

Major Media Update Part 3 - Extra Features

First, I'd like to apologize. This article was supposed to be a follow up to the other articles from a few months ago but I ran into some roadblocks and things from real life got in the way.

Regardless, I'm back on schedule and bringing you a short but important update about release plans, and a gameplay video!

Release plans:

I'm happy to announce that the first release of Coterminus is planned for Q3-Q4 of 2021! I'm really excited to share this news with you and I'm going to try my absolute best to meet this goal. I'm about 80% of the way right now and will update this page if plans need to change. Initially, you will be able to play through two chapters:

Coast and Prison

These chapters were chosen simply because they were the areas I was most interested in when I started making maps two years ago. Both chapters will be a mix of concepts, gameplay, assets, and features found in the 2002, 2003, and retail eras of HL2 while also sprinkling in some of my own artistic vision. Check out the video below to see an example of what I mean! (You can also find screenshots from both chapters in the images section)

Gameplay video:

This video demonstrates two maps from the Coast chapter. As you'll probably notice, these maps were based on retail coast maps but with significantly different atmosphere, enemies, details, and weapons. Also noteworthy, everything in the video is considered a work in progress which means it could all change before release.

What happens after the first release?

If everything goes according to plan, I will immediately shift focus to working on two new chapters as well as supporting other creators who want to use Coterminus as a base for their own work. The two chapters I would like to include in the second release are:

Intro/City17 and Ravenholm

Intro/City17 would include the beta trainride all the way up to and including Kleiner's teleport. Ravenholm should be self explanatory. I hope to be able to keep making yearly releases following the first one this year so that I'm constantly pushing updates, new content, new chapters, and support for other creators.

I have a few more articles I'll likely share with you before release, so look out for those.

As always, if you have questions or comments, I'd love to hear them. Thanks for stopping by!

Will be there any new maps? Since Valve made some maps which didn't get used in retail version of the game, also I really love coast chapters one of my most favourite ones.

Great video, I was waiting for it for a long time.
However, I have a couple of questions about the mod:

1 Will the retail models continue to be present or will they be replaced? Personally, I would like to continue using the cars of the retail version. (I mean when using Hammer)

2 Is it just my feeling or are the wasteland scanners moving somewhat roughly?
3 Will the small, medium and heavy ammunition system be used?

I also understand that the mod is still subject to change.

Thank you very much for reading, I look forward to the next articles with great enthusiasm.

1. retail car models have not been replaced, you should still be able to use them
2. they are pretty agile but I don't think they move roughly but I guess I'm also not really sure what you mean
3. no, every gun has its own ammo type now

thanks for the support!

Awesome work as always!
I have one question, will conterminus support mapbase? If no are you willing to "open source" the mod?

Thank you! I'm not planning on doing either at this moment but who knows what the future will bring. For now, I may port features from mapbase if needed

Simply amazing, really looking forward to it! Also, a question: do you plan to bring more enemies in the future? I'd love to see polished Combine Super Soldiers or Combine Guards in action.
