Hello everyone, this is the last article for Conquest of Life.


Writing this article has been one of my fears from the day I started this mod. I expected so much, I was so full of joy and motivation and working on this mod has been an amazing journey. However, with this heavy heart I'm writing this, it is time to say goodbye.

Conquest of Life is now officially cancelled, for once and for all. I am very well aware of having the tendency to write these "cancelled-continued-cancelled-continued" articles, but now I am one hundred percent certain of my choice of decision. Trust me, making this choice took a lot of time and I have considered everything and I have also thought through everything - but this is the best choice for both you there and me.

What made me make this decision?

Some of you might be eager to know the reasons behind this.

  • I have improved so much on HPL2. This might not sound like a reason to cancel a mod, as generally most would think improvement equals for good things. No denying - it does, but I do not think in a good way, especially when we look at this mod. I posted this mod to ModDB a week after I released my second mod, The Chosen Ones. Some of you might have played the mentioned mod - and there is no denying the massive amount of my beginner mistakes. These similar beginner mistakes were also in the very first screenshots I posted in this modpage. For example, in the previously linked screenshot, everything is wrong. Lighting is off, the detailing is pathetic and the textures are overly repetitive. The roof looks pretty unfitting and there are no concaves, as noob-Shyrtexx had no idea how to use them. As I progressed with the maps, I eventually began to become better in the design. I learnt the purpose of concaves, I learnt to script better, I started thinking outside the box with the puzzles and other gameplay elements, I learnt to use better lighting, including billboards and last but not least - particle systems and level fogs. This could be compared to the following scenario - imagine starting to study a foreign language. From day one forwards you start writing a never-ending story about something. After you have studied the language for a year and you come back to the very first sentences, you will not be satisfied with what you have there. This situation with CoL is now exactly the same - the first handful of maps simply do not satisfy myself. I have been going through revisioning, upgrading and adding. Still, I can not make myself satisfied for what I have at the start. The latest levels I have made are so much better than the ones I first made. Making all the levels again would be such a time-consuming task which I do not believe accomplishing.
  • Storyline. I knew this will be a problem for me, because just like I did with Orion, I did not even take a look at the story but rather jumped straight to levels. The milieu does not fit the story at all and the events and puzzles feel totally disconnected from the story.
  • I wanted something refreshing. I got what I wanted - I started working on my next mod, Year Zero. That time the storyline will be more original and about something I am personally interested in. The mansionbase setting was something I had no creativity for in the end.

The influence of Conquest of Life in Year Zero

However, just because the mod is cancelled does not mean that I will not be taking some features from it to Year Zero. Some of the maps I am satisfied with will be transferred to Year Zero. These maps are, including but not limited to, the Underground Section, Sewer and Old Archives.

I will also be including some of the puzzles I had in CoL - however, not any you saw on the demos. They would not make sense in the environment of Year Zero. I have some pretty neat puzzles of which no one has idea about and I feel like they fit YZ perfectly.

I will be referencing Conquest of Life throughout Year Zero multiple times, make sure to keep an eye open or you might miss them.

As this project meant so much for me, I want to thank everyone who has been there for the whole time, supporting me and this mod. I am very pleased with the feedback I have gotten, all negative, positive and constructive. I want to thank my voice actors, my awesome composer enzo2090 and everyone who lifted their fingers to help me with this mod. You all made this possible, and thanks to you all I will be continuing modding Amnesia. I especially want to thank HappyMatt12345 for all the help and fun times. I have gotten so many new friends, experiences and memories. Thank you all so much.

great mod, with a good story in wonderful environment without huge rooms and so, amazing puzzles with sense, for me, you need no more monster or "scary break" if your use this all the time the suppoused "scary time" turn bored and annoying, so I think if you keep this way, only need to add 3 or 4 maps following the story, and you make an amazing game, keep your way I want to see the end.

I'll make a video of both, and I also can't wait to play it! My question is do you need voice actors? I've always wanted to voice act in something and I thought maybe I could lend a hand if you need one, don't worry, it's free of charge.
