2022 COUNTDOWN

Welcome to the Players Choice: Best Upcoming Mods of 2022 Results! The following mods have been selected by ModDB readers from the Top 100 nominees to determine which mods they are most anticipating for future release.

The year is 1568. In the far aftermath of the disastrous Onin War and the in-fighting of feuding clans across Japan, turmoil is rife and has turned the lands into bountiful prey for all rungs of society from the likes of Uesugi Kenshin right down to the masses. You have been thrown into the Sengoku Jidai, the Warring States era of Japan. In your hands lies the power to craft your own destiny. Whether you take up a sword or brush in hand, it is up to you to carve your own path in Japan's history and make a name for yourself, be that through cunning foxery or brute force.

From the crew that brought you C&C Tiberian Dawn Redux for C&C Generals Zero Hour, C&C Red Alert Redux is now being developed and will be coming soon! Both Allied and Soviet factions from the original C&C Red Alert will be in the mod. Attack Dogs, Tesla Coils, Naval Warfare, and Chronoshifting are also in the works along with much more that is yet to be announced!

Half-Life: Enriched aims to update the look and feel of Half-Life with reworked maps and artwork. Enriched isn't trying to reinvent the wheel or dramatically change the Half-Life we know and love, but instead, polish up a classic, by adding more to the Black Mesa facility, enhancing the existing visuals, and designing updated (yet stylistically fitting) models for some of the game's core assets.

Half-Life: Recovery is a Modification which continues the plot of the official add-on Decay. The main character, Colette Green, is looking for a way to leave Black Mesa along with Dr. Keller. A portable teleportation device will help them to do it. Taking possession of it is considered a matter of life and death.

Sins of the Prophets is a total conversion mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion that transforms the game into a Halo-themed experience. Huge fleets of ships clash in the gravity wells of planets, asteroid fields, and massive structures. The skirmish style of the game allows for some of Halo's sandbox appeal to translate well into the mod. The space combat is brutal and fast - an element of the Halo story covered well in the books, but hasn't yet been fully realized in a game or film.

You're a new Sparta recruit, and a former Hanza citizen. Learn about the fate of the Arbat Confederation and the Sparta HQ after the events of Metro Last Light, bridging the gap between that game and Exodus in the Metro continuity. The mod is planned to be semi open world, with side quests and and environments taking you from stations, to catacombs, to bunkers, and the dangerous surface.

Candidate Twelve is a Black Mesa community campaign mod based off the highly-acclaimed Half-Life Echoes, created by the original author “Mr. Gnang”. Experience the sheer horror of the disaster once again with levels revamped from the original mod, featuring new assets that will bring a fresh experience for the player to enjoy!

Star Wars: Interregnum is an upcoming mod for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion that builds off of the highly successful Enhanced 4X Mod. Fleeing the unknown terror that is chasing the Vasari, the factions of Sins of a Solar Empire stumble on a temporary wormhole that takes them to a galaxy far, far away. The sudden arrival of armadas with trillions of refugees and thousands of warships between the events of Episodes 5 & 6 forever alters the Star Wars universe and plunges the galaxy into an unprecedented period of chaos and violence. Begun, a new conflict has.

Half-Life Decay: Solo Mission is a new, upcoming port of the PS2 exclusive Half-Life expansion "Decay", with the goal of rebuilding the game to work as a single player experience, thus allowing anyone to play through the entirety of Decay without the need for setting up a private server, and all the headaches that come with it. Along with allowing anyone to play Decay without needing a server, this port will also rework the visuals to make them more consistent with the original Half-Life, giving every map in Decay an extra bit of polish in the process, and all without making any major alterations to the original game.

First place for the mods yet to come (but which we almost can't wait for) is Entropy : Zero - Uprising - a submod to the titular Entropy : Zero which builds upon a powerful foundation with new and original ideas. Combine-adjacent mods have been a well the Half-Life community has returned to now and again, but Entropy : Zero has become a father to many mods where you're the bad guy on-site. Numerous spin-offs each taking a shot at the other side of humanity's struggle have emerged, and users have decided Uprising is the first among equals. Mods that create their own modding communities are a special kind of awesome, and it's amazing to see that reflected in our results this year.

Honorable Mentions

Before we present the winners, the following mods polled strongly and deserve our attention for either narrowly missing out, or they have previously placed in a best upcoming countdown and are ineligible to place again. These mods have significantly impressed us over 2022, and we are eagerly anticipating their future developments.

« No one cares about half life anymore, bro. It’s been 24 years.
Get over it ».

Says absolutely no one.
