It's too bad parallax doesn't add geometry, you can see that pretty easily when you look parallel to the surface. But still, a greatly useful effect.

Also, it doesn't cast shadows correct? It wouldn't really matter in default HL2 as the light is projected so close from your eyes(almost making the cost of shadow mapping it a waste), but you have the light parented to the gun's view model. Is it really that noticeable in game?

It is yes, it self shadows from the geometry that's offset in z space.
