A subtle "Special Edition" or "vanilla plus" version that adds bug fixes, replay value, extra functionality, content and atmosphere to the game, all while retaining that overall vanilla feeling, rather than the feeling of a vanilla game with various mini-mods tacked on as an afterthought.
There is one thing that rarely makes sense for me about huds used in the Stalker universe. Take the above for instance, it all looks great. but those look like bullet holes. If you are wearing a mask and there is a bullet hole in it, that means you've been shot in the head and should be dead.
Unless it is a mask that got picked up by the player.
I don't think it is meant to be approached with so much thought and insight, but yeah, i'd say you are right about the HUD.
I imagine a better indicator of a mask's/helmet's durability would be how clean or dirty (Burn marks, stains, dirt, etc.) the glass was; since you do occasionally walk through burner anomalies, endure rough weather, get in firefights, etc, with your helmet/mask, this idea would be similar I guess to how your gas mask functions in the Metro series, in which your glass gets fogged via condensation, or fumes, dirt, grit, etc, and you have to clean it or find/steal a new one.
The thing about Metro's masks are that it's a 3D layer over the GUI. So a lot of thought and hard work went into it. Not to mention the animations.
While I would love to add something like that into the stalker verse, it won't be an easy undertaking.
It's already possible within the engine to create effects like you mentioned at certain areas within a map via smart terrain. You could even use scripts if you really want to.
I can understand cracks and marks, dust or other easily understandable effects. But bullet holes feels cheap to me.
lol. True, but I never really designed this hud with realism in mind. I don't know how successful I was, but it's meant to look like your monitor screen is being damaged. This hud is also optional. It's not a part of the base mod.
Don't get me wrong, it looks good. And yes if your goal was to make the monitor look like it's getting damaged then you have done a solid job.
Is it possible to use multiple layers on the hug system? In this case, IIRC, the GUI and mask are on two different layers. So is there any way to add more?
I think the dynamic hud by Slevin has another layer for creating a breathing effect on the hud glass.
Mmmmm, so then it would be possible. And a breathing effect would be a couple of different frames to give it that animation effect. Unless it has a basic transparency slider effect, which I guess might just use less memory.
In any case, it would seem like all this is possible.
Have you ever consider mutant attack effects? Seeing as bullets are not the only thing that will hit the hud with force. Possibly scratch marks of sorts? Squid tentacle effect for bloodsucker?
That's a great idea to have different hud marks dependent on the mutant that's attacking you, but getting something like that to work would be above my capabilities, unfortunately.
Yeah you could even take it further with weather effects.
But it's also a limitation of Xray. Unless you want ot do a dirty job and script the hell out of it. Either way, stick to you have, it is good.
I like how the mod is coming along!
Thanks a lot! :)
I'm really not a fan of hud degradation and at the same time is an immersion-*****. I care more about the sounds and mechanics than having shards and blood splatters on my monitor to break that immersion.
I would really appreciate if there was included an option to turn this off, so others that feel the same way as I can fully enjoy this mod.
Hi Thorxic! This is an optional HUD (it's included in the "Options Pack for Call of Pripyat: Special Edition v0.8".). It's not included as standard in the main mod.
