Dont do this mission until you've been to Pripyat. You should get that dude's PKM, one way or another and a full drum of ammo. (There's some in the service center stash with the toolset)
Take it back here, throw a grenade to wake them up and kill some. Then gun them all down in that corridor.
A better strategy for people early on is that in the room full of bloodsuckers there is a corner on the left where you can stand and knife bloodsuckers they don't attack if your standing in the right place but it requires some trial and error.
