People who still use XP don't deserve to play STALKER. Let it die already.

What do these variables actually do, and why is using 06 better for modern operating systems?

It is the Windows NT version, which it checks first thing after lauching an exe. Vista is NT 6.0.

yes but xp is nt 5.1,not 4.so the 06 in the xrengine.exe has nothing to do with the nt version supported

It is exactly the NT version. I am aware XP is v5.1. If you put major version 5 there iinstead of 4 it works just as well. Look up the PE header specification for details.

so going by your logic this .exe would also work on windows 2000( being NT 5.0) and NT 4.0?

I am using XP because... I want to. On an Ivy Bridge based system.

i have an ivy bridge system as well with a gtx 680 and luckily all my hardware has driver support for windows xp, but i think its best to use the 64 bit version for call of chernobyl to have more headroom for addons. and in all honesty it runs better/smoother on windows xp.

Some advice though if you plan on using XP is to update the OS using "WSUS Offline" and the latest version for XP support is version 9.2.1

Description

A handful of people have wanted Windows XP support for a long time. I have been unable to successfully compile binaries to work under XP when using the v120_xp target version flag. However, it's been brought to my attention that you can actually crack the existing xrEngine.exe to work under Windows XP.

Using a Hex Editor, change both 06 at offset 00000170 and 00000178, to 04.

Warning! Trucks Cemetery will not load at all.
