Welcome to the first developer blog for Burning Empires!
The World: Burning Empires is going to feature an expansive map of europe, africa and the middle east, with 24 major starting factions. We try to keep the mod focused, but later we'll try to expand the map with additional factions, populating the northern forests, the hills of bactria and the deserts of arabia.
This map concept shows the location of cities for every faction in the first release.
Smaller barbarian factions may have only one city, with 2-3 fortified settlements (castles, not shown on this map), but that doesn't mean that they are not a threat, quite the opposite. The large empires have more settlements, making it difficult to protect all of their borders against barbarian incursions.
The Factions:
Western Roman Empire
Containing the ancient capital of Rome, the western half of the Empire was partitioned after Constantine I's death, but has been reunified less than two decades later. However, Constantius's efforts lasted for only a decade. Now, after Julian the Apostate and Jovian's deaths, the Empire has split once more, with the West being ruled by Valentinian I while the East is ruled by his brother Valens.
Eastern Roman Empire
When Constantine I moved the Empire's seat to his new city Constantinople, he established it as the second Rome on the remnants of the ancient city of Byzantium. Decades later, after reestablishing Christianity's legal status and the subsequent division, the Eastern half of the Empire borders their old nemesis; the Sassanid Empire.
Picts
North of the Antonine Wall lies the home of the Caledonii: Pictland. Also known as "The Painted People" due to their blue woad tattoos, the Picts would enter Britannia after a Roman garrison rebelled on Hadrian's Wall.
Scots
Given the Latin name for the Gaels as early as the late 3rd century, the term was used torefer to all Gaels, whether they reside in Ireland or Britain. Scoti raids in the early 360s would result in the "barbarian conspiracy" of 367, eventually leading to the end of Roman rule by 410.
Saxons
Prior to his tenure as emperor, Julian mentioned a people who were allied with Magnentius -a rival emperor- in 356AD. These allies were called "Saxons" and were a people who took to raiding by sea. A military district named the "Saxon Coast" was created on both sides of the Channel to halt raids. Thirty years before Odoacer's rule, the Saxons were referred to as the inhabitants and rulers of Britain.
Franks
An alliance of tribes that lived west of the Rhine River, the Franks have been described in Roman texts as allies and enemies. As time passed, Frankish raids into Roman territories became more and more frequent. In an effort to quell these raids, the Romans began a process of Frankish resettlement within their borders.
Alamans
Situated east of the Rhine river, the Alemanni (or "All Men") were embroiled in conflicts against the Roman Empire throughout the 3rd and 4th centuries. Their most memorable conflicts include their battles against Emperor Julian at Argentoratum and Emperor Valentinian I at Solicinium.
Langobards
The first mention of Langobard in history occured within Claudius Ptolemy's writings from the mid 2nd century. Subjects of the Saxon tribal union, the Langobards resisted Saxon supremacy under their king, Agelmund. When poor harvests became more commonplace, the Langobards began to migrate southwards, into Roman territory.
Burgundians
According to a report by Jordanes, in the 3rd century the Burgundians faced annihilation by the Gepids and their king, Fastida. Later on, the Burgundians confronted Roman Gaul, although they were defeated by Emperor Probus and his allies, the Silingian Vandals. By this time, the emperor Valentinian I has enlisted them in his war against the Alemanni.
Quadians
An early Germanic people that lived in the area of modern-day Moravia, the Quadi have done much, thanks to the assistance of other tribes. Along with the Marcomanni, the two peoples crossed the Danube, defeated a Roman army, passed the plain at the head of the Adriatic Sea, and besieged Aquileia, but they were soon defeated by Marcus Aurelius. Several generations later, the Quadi began fighting against the Romans again, alongside the Sarmatians and Goths.
Vandals
Mentioned by Tacitus, the Germanic Vandals have come to the attention of Roman authors by the 2nd century. Their reputation among Roman historians is mired by their participation in the Marcomannic Wars, the first invasion of Italy during the Roman Empire, as well as conflicts with the Goths.
Thervingians
A Gothic people from the northern plains of the Lower Danube and west of the Dniester River. Emperor Valens waged war on them for supporting the usurper Procopius. After chasing them through Gothic territory, they came to an agreement, swearing to never enter Roman territory again. With the introduction of Christianity thanks to Roman prisoners, the Thervingians took to persecution of their Christian brethren.
Greuthungians
Living on the Pontic steppe between the Dniester and Don rivers in what is now Ukraine, the gothic Greuthungi under Ermanaric embarked on a large scale expansion. Jordanes records that Ermanaric conquered numerous warlike tribes. When the Huns overran the Alans, both the Alans and Huns invaded Gothic territory.
Anteans
The Anteans were an ancient slavic tribe that resided between the Danaster and Danaper.
According to Jordanes the Antes were the bravest of the Venedian tribes.
The first slavic ruler mentioned by ancient historians was the Antean Bozh, who waged war against the Greuthungians.
Venedians
Consisting of a confederation of Eastern Slavic tribes (including the Anteans), the Venedians lived on the eastern fringe of Germania. Being a populous nation, the Venedians occupy a great expanse of land east of the Vistula.
Sarmatians
The Sarmatians are an Iranian confederation whose history stretches back to classical antiquity, the strongest Sarmatian tribe was the Iazyges from Pannonia, who waged almost constant war against Rome. Beginning in the 4th century, most Roman authors cease to distinguish between the different Sarmatian tribes, and instead refer to all as Sarmatians.
Alans
Hailing from central Asia, the Iranian nomads migrated westward and achieved a dominant position amongst the Sarmatians living between the Don River and Caspian Sea. When the Goths entered the steppe, many Alans retreated eastward, where some have established contact with the Huns. By 370, relations between the Alans and Huns were broken, but some Alans stayed with the Huns, assisting them with their expansion.
Huns
Living in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Eastern Europe, the nomadic Huns first invaded Alan lands and forced them to either fight for them or flee. Over time, the Huns would conquer other Germanic tribes, triggering massive migrations into Roman territory.
Armenia
Surrounding the mountains of Ararat, the highland-dwelling Armenians are ruled by the Arshakuni dynasty, a branch of the Parthian Arsacids. Armenia lays claim to being the first nation to adopt Christianity in the 4th century. As they reside between the Eastern Romans and Sassanids, the Armenians are resisting incursions both physically and spiritually.
Sassanid Empire
Founded by Ardashir I after the Parthian Empire's demise, the empire enjoyed a golden era under Shapur II, who defeated the Arabs, secured southern territory, and fought against the Romans. Although they lost Bactria to the Xionite huns, the Sassanids continued to pursue a harsh religious policy towards Christians and heretics.
Lakhmids
Situated in southern Iraq, the Arab Kingdom of the Lakhmids was founded by the Banu Lakhm from Yemen. By 325AD, the Sassanid Empire under Shapur II defeated the Lakhmids and vassalized them.
Tanukhids
The Tanukhids were a confederations of Syrian Arab tribes, who played a key role in Zenobia's defeat at the hands of Emperor Aurelian. Serving as Roman foederati, the Tanukhids would embrace Christianity and under the rule of Queen Mavia, they would revolt against Emperor Valens in 378AD.
Maurians
Mauri was the Latin designation for the Berbers of Mauretania. During the 370s, Mauri raids were carried out on Roman towns in northwest Africa, prompting Theodosius the Elder to campaign against them. By 372, a Moorish chieftain named Firmus would raise a revolt against the Romans, taking several Roman regiments with him.
Rebellion of Firmus
Between 372 and 375, the Moorish chieftain Firmus revolted against the Comes Africae Romanus. Based on Romanus' neglect towards African tribes and Roman cities, Firmus gained support from Berber tribes and instigated a protracted guerrilla war.
That's it for this developer blog, we'll try to present a new article every now and then.
What would you like to see next?
I have to mention that the symbol of the Alamanni could be used to censor the mod in Germany, as any version of the Swastika can be legally only displayed in connection with Dharmic religions. As there is no connection with these Indian faiths here, the symbol as is is illegal, which is punishable.
This can also lead to trouble with TaleWorlds, ModDB and other sites/companies.
I do NOT support this censorship, but I thought I should warn you especially as I'm looking forward to the mod and don't want it to be endangered.
I suggest using a different symbol in the center of the Alamanni symbol.
Thanks for the warning, we'll use a different faction symbol if that could lead to problems!
There was another symbol we scrapped that contained swastikas, i thought this one is much more subtle, but apparently not.
I don't like this censorship either, especially when it's completely unrelated to 20th century politics.
But at the end of the day it's not a big deal and i have a bunch of other cool alamannic symbols to choose from! :)
I would digress from redsimon's statement as it is not precisely correct, and furthermore the situation has changed quite a bit in 2018 regarding the use of anti-constitutional or outlawed symbols (such as the swastika in any variation) in videogames:
If an educational, artistical or cultural context is given (as in this case, pertaining to section 86a, paragraph 3 "Sozialadäquanz" of the German criminal code) and there is no inclination to glorify or propagate the NSDAP (or related organs), (German) fascism or crimes committed under this or related ideologies, they may remain. This has been in the criminal code for decades, but videogames were a peculiar and muddled field regarding this (Wolfenstein-ruling of '98), as they were treated as "lacking any cultural or educational worth" (German anachronisms and bureaucracy). What changed is that videogames have lately been included and now may be reviewed and regarded as significant "contributions to art and culture", same as for example books and movies.
I have yet to hear about a mod on an international server and community being willingly blocked or put on the index in Germany for using such symbols in a historical context (excluding mods where you can indiscriminately impersonate a follower of these ideologies), in contrast to such using them in an outright sympathetic, propagating, trivializing or anti-constitutional way (which happened and happens). Actual reviewing of products falling under these rules is generally applying rather to goods officially published, traded and sold in Germany.
If in doubt, I would suggest either directly contacting the German authorities regarding this (although I doubt the effort is necessary, if it is not exaggerated) and/or just putting a short, obvious and proper disclaimer regarding the symbolism and its underlying reference to avoid and defend it from being claimed or (mis)used by pro-fascist organizations or other groups sympathetic with German fascism and overtly distance yourself as a developer from such. That is what I usually see devs doing (such as the "Misery"-mod team, MDT, and their statement on using Hitler's "Mein Kampf" as a random ingame "immersion" item).
It would be a shame if your elaborate artwork would go unused or even discarded due to legal squabbling and bureaucracy that is (imho) overdrawn in your case. As it would also be a (even greater) shame if some insolent national-socialist/fascist/right-wing assface would misuse it for their own political or ideological purposes.
Thank you!
I think we can keep it then, if we recieve complaints from moddb or Taleworlds, we can always change it.
fck the germans.
i say **** all the world except china cause we Chinese are gods and you are the worm people put on the earth to be conquered by us Chinese gods we will rule the whole world we are your masters we are your gods worship us you sub humans!
Hi, how we can connect you and help you?
It is a reversed swastika and its linked to paganism. So no problem in that I guess, and recently germany has lifted the ban in videogames
There is no blanket ban (never was), just the rules have been made clearer. If they think you are violating the rules, you risk a ban and worse if you are connected to the project and live in Germany.
you can replicate the features of nova aetas with the religion, economy, etc
We'll try to make a religion system for sure, it's quite essential to many of the conflicts that happened that time.
its very good!
I feel that the African territories will be quickly lost due to the lack of a fleet
Dacia should be a faction
It would be very inaccurate to add Dacia as a faction, by the time of our setting there was no significant dacian presence, the area was ruled by the goths. However, we'll add Carpians or Carpodaces as a minor faction as the last remnant of the dacian tribes.
Banner for Saxons is Thors hammer ? I cant agree. I suggest you to use Attila Total War with Forgoten Realms mod and check banners. I could send you screenshots.
Im folowing this and wish you luck
It's a placeholder, saxon banners are not done yet.
I've played Forgotten Realms, one of my favorite mods for Attila, but as far as i know they kept the vanilla banners.
I have Bannerlord version 1.0.2 so far,can i give a try with latest alpha relase ? And well done so far. Can we expect full relase soon ? and one more question,by your ModB name, are you Hungaryan ?
Hey, 1.0.2 should work fine i think, but i'd recommend to update to 1.03 anyway.
The full release is still not in sight, we'd need more help in the coding department.
And yes, i'm Hungarian :)
Koszi teso meg le a kalappal ,alig varom a telyes kiadast.
No India?
I'm looking forward to it.
nice
This will be my favorite mod :D
I hope to see something like this: I.pinimg.com

Dead mod?
Why it's not on Nexus Mod?
And why you don't collaborate with the CA Eagle Rising mod? Instead of making many mods on the same theme (which then often die), join together and make a single epic mod on Rome!
It's very much alive, also we're collaborating with the head dev of Eagle Rising. (Even though it's not the same theme)
Ok, but I mean why don't you develop together his mod with these new ideas?
Hey i really like this idea and this mod tho i have some questions. Will you maybe add also the Dacians as a faction? and also as a culture i guess... Or at least have some special things about that part of the map?I would really love to play as my ancestors as i am Romanian myself! sorry for bad eng
Keep up the good work.!
Dacians were disappearing around that time as a cultural identity, their last remnants, the Carpodaces/Carpi will be persent as a minor factions though :)
Accually they were mixing with the Romans at that time but i still think it would be a nice implementation in the game as some of my Romanian brothers will like to play as them. Also i see those city's on the map so there will be also custom troops for this faction i assume .
True, those Carpi who were deported to the empire were mixing with the romans, but the cultural identity quickly dissolved.
I'll still include them north of the borders, because Zosimus mentions them as part of a hunnic invasion force in 381, but this is really the last time dacians existed as a distinct group.
They'll have their own custom troops with falxes, just to have some fun with it :)
Haha very nice i cant wait :)
what about the cheruschi and the other germanic tribes? i would love to see "germania" full of villages, not densed of course but since that region was full of many germanic villages, it would be a beatiful sight to see
I hope more of the east will be added to the map as the east still concerns of iranian territories that were historically involved with the west. And the geology really needs work, the aral sea was much larger than it is today and iran was much greener back then than it is today, even today it is lusher than what this map implies. Authenticity is key.
