Honorable Mentions

With so many fantastic mods posting major updates and leveraging their passionate communities, we'd like to direct your praise and attention to these honorable mentions. A honorable mention is given for polling strongly in the awards, but being ineligible due to placing higher in a previous year, or if a significant update was not released in 2019:

Mod of the Year Top 10

The Empire has fallen and a New Republic is born out of the conflict. But in the ashes of civil war, yet another life stirs... A complete remake of Empire at War: Forces of Corruption, including new units, effects, audio, maps, shaders and much more. New mechanics make for more immersive experience and the totally new Mandalorian faction replaces the Zann Consortium in this mostly lore-friendly unofficial expansion mod.

Tiberium Essence offeres alternative gameplay to Tiberian Wars involving many Tiberian Sun units which many CnC fans miss in vanilla CNC3 and add even new my made units which you can't find anywhere else. Includes many visual, sound and balance changes and new sounds, new music, new effects (like blood and gore, new infantry deaths, new more realistic missile trails) and much more.

Wars of Liberty is a modification for Age of Empires III. WoL brings 24 new civilizations, dozens of new maps, natives, music, and more. Each civilization has its own unique gameplay that will turn Age of Empires III into an almost new RTS experience. Choose a Religion and gain access to new units, technologies, and the ability to gather and spend our unique faith resource. Spy on your enemies and destroy them without building a single military unit with the redone Espionage system. Break late game stalemates with the powerful Great War Age. And enjoy it all with more than 50 new Random Maps, new Natives for Latin America and Africa, new music, and much, much more.

Star Wars Battlefront II Remaster is an attempt to revamp one of the best Star Wars games ever released by making your game more realistic and HD, through adjusting color saturation, improving game lighting, sharpening the image, using a more subtle bloom. Enjoy better maps, units, vehicles, weapons and effects while keeping ONLINE COMPATIBILITY.

Republic at War is a total conversion modification for Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption. The mod replaces the Empire with the Galactic Republic and the Rebel Alliance with the Confederacy. Republic at War focuses heavily on the theatrical films but also contains content from the Clone Wars cartoon series as well as the expanded universe. Players can re-enact various Clone War campaigns such as the Outer Rim Sieges. Players will have the choice to fight as either the CIS or the Republic and wage war for control of the galaxy. Realism is key and players will have unprecedented control over how and where they fight.

The goal of Half-Life 2 : MMod is to enhance and expand gunplay, combat mechanics and the immersion factor by giving the Player more options and combat opportunities as well as refine how the Player handles his arsenal. Half-Life 2 : MMod also offers minor AI enhancements, extended abilities for combine soldiers, multiple bug fixes, enhanced visuals, VFX re-design, sound redesign and much much more, while keeping nearly every new feature in the mod totally optional.

4TH PLACE

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Anomaly

For: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

Anomaly is a standalone S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mod powered by an x64 version of the X-Ray engine. Starting with version 1.5.0 Anomaly uses a custom engine build called the XRay-Monolith engine. After almost one year of development of the Anomaly 1.5.0 update, the mod continues its way on expanding and adding new features while maintaining a high level of quality and replay value.

Thrawn's Revenge is a large-scale mod for Empire at War: Forces of Corruption. It includes the events of the Galactic Civil War after Palpatine's death at Endor, up until the signing of the Pellaeon-Gavrisom treaty.

The Ultimate Apocalypse mod team proudly presents to the Dawn of War: Soulstorm players and fans, an eagerly awaited and packed with epic content game experience, the Ultimate Apocalypse mod! Imagine a mod featuring massive Warhammer 40,000 battles where all 9 races in Soulstorm (and more!) have a chance at epic victory. A mod where there's no shortage of all new units, buildings, abilities, and even titans! A mod where there's nearly no limits holding you back.

The Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption voters really showed up in 2019, with 9 mods making the top 100- but ultimately it was Empire At War Remake: Galactic Civil War that won in the end, a mod that wants to keep the original FoC experience, maintain the game's design philosophy, but with improved graphics and deeper gameplay. It features new models and textures for most units and also ramps up the difficulty for a real challenge! Massive congratulations, it's great to see this game have such an incredible and passionate modding community pushing it forward 13 years after release!

Congratulations to all the modders and community members who participated in the 2019 Mod of the Year awards! We wish you all the best for your continued modding efforts into the new year and beyond.

Congratulations everyone! This year was remarkable, as it featured some of the best Crysis mods activity. For the first time since 2012, we had two Crysis Wars mods made it to Top-100, that was Stalker: Legacy of Times and MechWarrior: Living Legends. And of course I must mention Crysis Co-op, which is really amazing.

We really look forward to the next year's Mod of the Year competition to feature even more CryEngine content and possibly win the contest. Good luck everyone and thanks to all who voted!

Congratulations to the winners!

For the next year I would however be happy to see that there is only one vote per person in the finals voting round. The multiple vote seems for me to have been the major reason that there are three Star Wars mods from the same game in the top 10 now.

That is definetely a factor. We saw a few waves of voters who blindy voted for games vs. mods. Will think about how to manage that

How sad, 10 year old mods for 15 year old games dominate. We have mod tools for Black Ops 3 among other modern games, I wonder if they'll ever take the place or if its gonna be Empire at War and Tiberium Wars and Stalker and Half Life for all eternity.

Then again Valve is really to blame, where is Source 2 and Half Life 3? Bah. Haven't seen much from Stalker 2 ever since its been announced like... years ago too?

Well I voted for MMOD among others. Glad to see Anomaly not in the top 3. Curious what the Mandalorians mod has done since I last played it like... 8 years ago. Was a fantastic mod back then. Apparently still is.

A great Fallout 4 mod would have been cool.

Honestly I think once a Mod has won it should no longer qualify in future rounds to make place for the new breed.

Awesome, man I told Petroglyph in their forums a couple times to make another EaW. I dunno if Battlefleet Gothic: Armada is moddable, but its the closest we got kinda.

Heh I still remember like its yesterday when I posted a comment about the Lictor ship having problem with its smoke. That update is 10 years old now xD

I never liked the weak heroes but boy your mod was amazing fun back then I played it so much.

A remake eh? I'll make sure to check it out. How long have you been modding that now?

When it comes to gameplay my favorite has always been... Ultimate Empire at War, the old derelict version, I think 4 it was. There was also a rad FX mod, I think it was literally called FX. Sadly abandoned.

Ah one day I must get into EaW modding. Even if only to merge these two.

Reply Good karma Bad karma-6 votes

The FX mod was literally a proof of concept for Thrawns Revenge. Made mostly by the same people. I worked with them a bit when they were making it (and subsequently contributed a few things to TR afterward). This is why it was abandoned. But yeah, thats how long ive been modding...since the Filefront days. Over a decade. Be sure to grab the Steam version as it already has several patches.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+3 votes

Yeah I remember now. It was also a side project because some people really are the sort of lunatics that make 2 mods at the same time xD

Needless to say those often fail... glad that Thrawns Revenge is so successful. Played it a bit some years ago. Its cool.

FX mod has one major problem, way too many fighters. Well that and its unfinished, but boy is it pretty.

I should really talk more about your mod I know. Its really on my list of things to cover, Mandalorians are awesome! So sad that Star Wars canon has been reduced to a joke.

Hey I remember telling you about the Playstation 2 game Bounty Hunter, you probably still didn't get to play that one xD You really should mate, its literally the live of Boba (or was it Jango?) Fett.

The amount of RTS games also shows quite well how modding has killed the RTS franchise, together with MOBA of course. Why buy a new game when you can just download a mod for a game of the golden days where publishers would invest millions into a true RTS engine?

It is really weird.

Act of War has mod tools as does Ground Control 2 and now Steel Division 2 as well. I wonder if we'll ever see mods from those games make it.

One of my votes went for World in Conflict Modern Warfare. I am a bit surprised to not see it in here. WiC is to this day setting a gold standard for strategy games and the MW mod even more so.

Starcraft 1 mods aren't really on ModDB so they're missing. Insurgency has many small amazing mods as does Total War including new Total War games.

Supreme Commander didn't make it either, well I wouldn't know of a mod for it that could have qualified.

Ah well, a happy new year, many great mods, modding ain't dead at all, it survived so much and keeps going stsrong.

Thanks ModDB! :D you are very precious!

Reply Good karma Bad karma-15 votes

I don't think that modding really killed the RTS genre. If you look at commercial trends, there aren't many RTS games. Publishers don't tend to invest in them. Commercially it's almost an extinct genre. But looking at non-commercial sector, I think modding communities show how valuable RTS games are in reality.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+11 votes
the_Farseer

Exactly. The RTS genre "died" because companies saw more profit in FPS and now MMO games. There was no creative way to monetize RTS games outside of expansion packs, which were a one time purchase.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+6 votes
Alex626
Alex626

That's right. No hats or loot boxes, no pay2win model. RTS is fair, your skill is the only factor of victory. Unlike MMO games, they just can't generate that money out of thin air.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+4 votes
OrangeNero

Well yes RTS died because there was no money to be made there exactly because people are more than happy with Tiberium Wars mods instead of buying a new RTS that can barely match it in terms of quality. You can see it with Age of Empires 2 DE. People come in droves and claim they're being "ripped off" because they already own some other version of the game.

BTW. It comes with the editor and I am in the middle of learning how to mod that. A fantastic game with a fantastic editor. A true RTS as well. Might win a Steam Award. I hope a mod for it can make it into the next MOTY.

Of course you can monetize an RTS.

You can sell hats for soldiers. Funny tank skins. Different looks for vehicles. You can sell stat boosts and introduce an RPG like system.

At the very end of C&C we were gonna have Generals 2 and End of Nations. The latter was a Free 2 Play game that was totally gonna have all sorts of monetization. Nobody seems to remember Victory, a ****** RTT from Petroglyph that never released. It had cards that you'd buy with upgrades, sort of like Titanfall if I remember correctly.

I can still not believe that we didn't get End of Nation AND Generals 2.

Uhhh there are more FPS mods than RTS mods. RTS isn't done by developers because it is not a format amicable with microtransactions. Starcraft 2 was the one to try it and people just BEGGED FOR OPTIONS TO TURN OFF THEIR "SKINS". So yeah it's good that RTS hasn't been defile with new always online pay to win crap.- But not because of mods at all.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+4 votes

WTF is it with all these idiots thinking you can't put microtransactions into a RTS?

FFS we already had plenty of those games.

Reply Good karma Bad karma-6 votes

I cant think of a single RTS game with loot boxes or microtransactions. And I play a lot of them. They have expansion packs or DLC but its not required to be competitive and its not a purchase that is left to chance. You pay money and know with 100% certainty what you are getting.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+2 votes

Halo Wars 2 for example, almost every RTS for mobile phones. End of nations if it would have happened, Victory if it would have happened. StarCraft 2 has them and I don't know what made this idiot claim that this somehow "failed" or that nobody wants them.

Obviously at least 50% of the people want them and buy them. The other 50% then go and cry about it and claim nobody wants it.

I know I am gonna get downvortes like crazy and I don't care because other people's opinion are literally worthless to me.

We are here, in a time when everyone claims that RTS is dead and yet 7 out of 10 MOTY mods are RTS so clearly everybody that would be buying an RTS is instead just playing a mod or probably Fortnite or a Moba.

Broaden it a bit into the RTT genre to have more games and you'll find plenty. Battletech has microtransactions. Its just one for that one mech but its there.

Steel Division has them. Oh and Company of Heroes 2. Oh and Call to Arms. A truly amazing game. Honestly one of the best RTS games out recently but eh nobody cares about it for some reason.

Its not necessarily a bad thing that modding is killing RTS from the inside. OpenRA is pretty cool afterall among other projects. Sadly no OpenRA mod made it and instead Star Wars got it all, I wonder why, the last few movies were all **** (apart from 8 which was epic, but only few know xD)
